Steve Jobs, the late Apple co-founder who reshaped modern technology, will soon appear on an official United States dollar coin. California selected Jobs to represent the state in the American Innovation $1 Coin Program, a nationwide initiative honoring transformative American achievements.
The recognition places Jobs among historic innovators whose work changed the nation’s direction. For many, the decision reflects his lasting influence on computing, communication, and digital culture.
California Celebrates an Icon of Innovation
The coin design presents a young Steve Jobs seated against a distinctly Northern California backdrop of rolling hills and oak-covered scenery. It also includes the inscription “Make Something Wonderful,” a phrase linked to one of Jobs’ well-known reflections on creativity and contribution.
California Governor Gavin Newsom praised the decision, describing Jobs as someone who embodied the innovative and entrepreneurial spirit associated with the state. His comments framed the tribute as both a celebration of personal ambition and California’s culture of invention.
Part of a National Innovation Program
The American Innovation $1 Coin Program began in 2018. The United States Mint created the initiative to honor innovators, groundbreaking inventions, and historic achievements from every state, the District of Columbia, and US territories.
Previous honorees have highlighted achievements such as the polio vaccine, the lightbulb, and the International Space Station. California’s selection of Steve Jobs aligns with the program’s focus on transformative ideas that changed everyday life.
Limited Release for Collectors
The Mint plans a limited production of 25,950 Steve Jobs coins. Buyers will be able to purchase them in rolls of 25 or bags of 100. Pricing begins at $61 for a roll, while larger bags cost $154.50.
Although the face value remains one dollar, collector pricing reflects production and packaging costs. Orders will be capped per household, adding exclusivity for collectors and Apple enthusiasts alike.

Jobs’ appearance on US currency carries symbolic importance beyond collecting. His work helped launch devices and services that changed how billions communicate, work, and create.
