Apple has unveiled its next major film project, Tenzing, an adventure drama that tells the story of the first successful climb to the summit of Mount Everest. The movie will debut in select theaters on October 9 before arriving on Apple TV on October 16.
The film marks Apple’s first theatrical movie release of 2026. It also continues the company’s strategy of giving prestige films a limited run in cinemas before streaming them worldwide.

A Story Told Through Tenzing Norgay’s Eyes
Tenzing focuses on the life of legendary Sherpa climber Tenzing Norgay. The story follows his journey from an unknown mountaineer in the Himalayas to one of the world’s most celebrated explorers. The film also highlights his partnership with New Zealand climber Edmund Hillary and the support he received from his wife, Dawa.
Their historic achievement in 1953 changed mountaineering forever. As a result, both climbers became global symbols of determination and adventure.
Star-Studded Cast and Creative Team
Actor Genden Phuntsok plays Tenzing Norgay, while Tom Hiddleston portrays Edmund Hillary. The cast also includes Willem Dafoe and Caitriona Balfe in key roles.
Jennifer Peedom directs the film from a story she developed with writer and producer Luke Davies. Meanwhile, producers Liz Watts and Emile Sherman oversee the project.
Why Apple Chose a Theatrical Release
Apple often uses limited cinema releases to build excitement around its films. The approach also helps movies qualify for major awards and encourages early reviews from critics.
In addition, the sweeping landscapes of Mount Everest make Tenzing well suited for the big screen. The mountain’s dramatic setting could provide audiences with an immersive viewing experience before the film reaches streaming platforms.
Apple has not announced additional release markets or theater counts. However, the company has confirmed that the drama carries a TV-PG rating and blends adventure with emotional storytelling.
For viewers who enjoy true stories and epic adventures, Tenzing may become one of Apple’s most anticipated films of the year.
