No Public Directory or Search Feature
Unlike traditional social media platforms, WhatsApp will not create a public username directory. People will need to know an exact username before they can start a conversation with someone for the first time.

WhatsApp has already started allowing users to reserve usernames gradually. Because more than three billion people use the app, early reservations give users a chance to claim their preferred names before the official launch.

The company is also introducing an optional feature called a “username key.” Users who enable it will require new contacts to know both their username and the additional key before starting a chat.
