Apple has released watchOS 27.0.1 to address an unexpected restart problem affecting its newest smartwatches. The update targets Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4.
The company introduced the software on September 23, just over a week after the public launch of watchOS 27.0. Moreover, the update focuses on improving device stability rather than introducing new features.
Apple Watch Users Report Unexpected Restarts
Several owners reported that their watches restarted without warning during everyday activities.
Some experienced sudden reboots while changing watch faces or making phone calls. Meanwhile, others encountered the problem when using Siri AI, Apple Maps or the App Store.
The issue also interrupted workout recordings. In some cases, watches reportedly restarted even when their owners were not actively using them.
Consequently, the problem affected several basic smartwatch functions and raised concerns about reliability.
Neural Engine Timeout May Explain the Bug
An Apple support forum post offered a possible explanation for the unexpected restarts.
According to the post, an affected device experienced a Neural Engine timeout. A command took 2,020 milliseconds, exceeding the system’s 2,000-millisecond limit.
The device subsequently restarted. However, Apple has not officially confirmed the underlying cause of the problem.
The company also lists no published Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) entries for watchOS 27.0.1. Therefore, the release appears to focus on stability rather than addressing publicly documented security vulnerabilities.
How to Install watchOS 27.0.1
Apple has limited the update to the Series 12 and Ultra 4. Owners of these models can install it directly through their watches or a paired iPhone.
Before updating, users should charge their watches to at least 50% and connect to Wi-Fi.
Next, open Settings on the Apple Watch, select General and choose Software Update. Then follow the installation instructions.
Alternatively, open the Apple Watch app on a paired iPhone and navigate to General, followed by Software Update.
Although the release introduces no major new features, it addresses a disruptive problem for affected owners. Ultimately, watchOS 27.0.1 aims to restore dependable everyday performance to Apple’s latest smartwatches.
