PSP will connect to Mac
Coolest. News. Ever. According to
PSP World, Sony announced
yesterday that it will be releasing software to allow the PSP to link to PCs and Macs within a year. Hopefully, they’ll
roll out support for both platforms simultaneously. If not, at least there is already
iPSP.
Yair Landau, vice chairman of Sony Pictures, also commented, ”It will be very easy for you to get video on your portable device.” Could the PSP serve as substitute for the mythical video iPod I’ve dreamed about for so long?

Man, these guys are finally getting on the bandwagon. Mac users have been begging for minidisc integration for years. The new leadership is finally letting go of Sony's pride and making some sensibile business decision making.

I know that this is the offically sanctioned software, but what about iPSP? I know engadget previewed it a little while back.

The issue is not "pride" but "proprietary". SONY has always tried to dominate with non-standard standards. Now they are--literally--one of the last companies out there to open their mind to a more non-proprietary mindset.
That said, even if the PSP could play video, does anyone really care? Having thousands of songs in your pocket is one thing. Video? Seems like a white elephant of a feature.

The PSP CAN play video. In fact it can play movie-length videos and is packed with Spiderman 2!!
the best thing about the PSP is the fact that it is amazingly powerful for it's price and has a gorgeous screen. Combined with memory stick media, I think that this is going to be quite a hackable device.
with built in wireless for example, someone could port an application like Salling Clicker, making this a kick-ass media remote.Heck someone one of these days will probably get itunes streaming to it! It has web access, after all...

$300 to duplicate what a $30 media remote can do. Brilliant!

I've been using a PSP for my portable video needs for about a month now. Its OK, but not great. Having to juggle memory cards is like the bad old days of portable MP3 players. UMD might solve this if they made a writeable drive. Considering that Sony never did produce a data capable mini-disc unit for the PC, I'd be really surprised if they came out with a UMD drive that wasnt somehow crippled.
iPSP is good software. Considering Sony's software design track record, I doubt they will come up with anything better.

No, $250 for what media remotes that cost $100 - $300 can do, plus play games, movies, music. I'm using pspware for integration with the Mac and it works great. With the wireless connectivity it won't be long before surfing the net is possible, along with downloading psp formatted movies and music. It's not an iPod killer, but it certainly raises the bar for Apple.
