Music from the road less travelled

cdroots albumI'm always on the prowl for new (or new-to-me), iPod-worthy tunes.

CDRoots looks like a great place to find some interesting new "World music." The site is a treasure trove of music from exotic locales such as Tuva, Belize, Mali, Serbia - even Canada ;-)

It even has a shuffle mode!

The Outside the Roots section also looks great for finding music that "blurs the boundaries between folk, roots jazz and rock."

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to check if iTunes has any songs with high-powered electro-soukous machines available for download.

You should check out Magnatune, in particular their world music section. I particularly like Beth Quist, who combines rock, middle-eastern, and central european influences. A couple of key advantages -- you can try full 128Kbps MP3s before you buy, when you buy you can get full losseless versions, and 50% of the revenues go to the artists (many independent world-music CDs the proceeds do not go to the artists, but to a producer who recorded them.)
