On Buying the New Foo Fighters Album from the iTMS
So, this morning, as I was doing my daily morning routine—500 push-ups, 1000 crunches, a 30-minute jog around my apartment...you know, the usual—anyway, as I was doing all this, I decided to go grab the new Foo Fighter's album from the iTMS, as it was released today, and I am a huge fan of the Foo.Why do I mention this here on TUAW? Well, I have two reasons: The first, typical of me, is a complaint. I purchased, started the download and then continued with the aforementioned daily morning routine. When I was ready to jet out the door, I ran over to my Powerbook to shut her up and go, only to discover that only half of the double-album had been downloaded because the iTMS had decided to launch a little dialog window thanking me for purchasing this album. Thanks, but no thanks. This dialog stopped the download and made me late heading out the door. Sure, I could have just shut everything up and gone, but I didn't want to risk mangling any of the tracks or iTunes saying "You have already downloaded all purchased music." I wouldn't mind the dialog if it didn't interrupt the download, but as is, it is a supreme pain. Dear Apple, please fix this. Thank you.
Item number 2: I think this is the first album from the iTMS that I have seen, let alone purchased, that came with both a digital booklet and a bonus Interview video with the band. Super-cool value-added to the online purchase. I wonder if the actual CD set contains this bonus video. In any case, I wanted to note that I like this growth in the iTMS. I think it is value-added and makes me hate them just a little bit less for all their DRM nastiness (although I still hate them).
Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to burn this double-album to CD and then re-rip it so I can put it on my LifeDrive and my PSP.

Berylium, the actual music files are encoded with the DRM. The program that runs when first inserting the CD is there to download the music liscences (unlock the DRM). Without running the program, you can't play the songs in ANY music player. Not Windows MP, Music Match, nor iTunes. My experience with the new Foo cd, is when i tried importing into iTunes or even play in iTunes for that matter it was "skip city". I mean... it imported and all, but the songs sounded like someone wipped their ass with the cd before importing.

Holding down Shift when inserting a CD in Windows cancels any application that was supposed to autrun, it sounds like the DRM enforcing app LaunchCD.exe is one such application. If the LaunchCD never runs it's very likely you can open iTunes and rip the CD as you normally would.

June 15 2005 at 9:49 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replysorry anyone with a ipod and Pc. i got an email back from DRM company,sunncomm.com about what i should do ... Thank you for contacting us, Robert. We appreciate your purchase of the Foo Fighters CD and are happy to assist you with the music transfer.. Please follow the instructions below in order to move your content into iTunes and onto an iPod: If you have a Mac computer you can copy the songs using your iTunes Player as you would normally do. If you have a PC place the CD into your computer and allow the CD to automatically start. If the CD does not automatically start, open your Windows Explorer, locate the drive letter for your CD drive and double-click on the LaunchCD.exe file located on your CD. Once the application has been launched and the End User License Agreement has been accepted, you can click the Copy Songs button on the top menu. Follow the instructions to copy the secure Windows Media Files (WMA) to your PC. Make a note of where you are copying the songs to, you will need to get to these secure Windows Media Files in the next steps. Once the WMA files are on your PC you can open and listen to the songs with Windows Media Player 9.0 or higher. You may also play them in any compatible player that can play secure Windows Media files, such as MusicMatch, RealPlayer, and Winamp, but it will require that you obtain a license to do so. To obtain this license, from the Welcome Screen of the user interface, click on the link below the album art that says If your music does not play in your preferred player, click here. Follow the instructions to download the alternate license. Using Windows Media Player only, you can then burn the songs to a CD. Please note that in order to burn the files, you need to upgrade to or already have Windows Media Player 9 or greater. Once the CD has been burned, place the copied CD back into your computer and open iTunes. iTunes can now rip the songs as you would a normal CD. Please note an easier and more acceptable solution requires cooperation from Apple, who we have already reached out to in hopes of addressing this issue. To help speed this effort, we ask that you use the following link to contact Apple and ask them to provide a solution that would easily allow you to move content from protected CDs into iTunes or onto your iPod rather than having to go through the additional steps above. http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipod.html Please let us know if we can assist you further. It worked!! ipod suffle 150 bucks. foo fighters cd 12 bucks. trying to put WMA protected cd on a ipod.. insane. it seems more and more likely my next computer will be a apple. good luck to everyone else with this problem...
June 14 2005 at 6:58 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyBob, if you had a mac that wouldn't happen. That software does not work on Apple computers and I was easily able to rip both Foo CDs and then transfer them to my iPod without a problem. Just one more reason why macs are better than PCs.
June 14 2005 at 5:52 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYep, I just picked up the album at Best Buy for $9.99. They had the DualDisc version there, but when I got the newest NIN album on DualDisc, I found out the hard way that those disks are thicker than a normal CD when it wouldn't eject from my Powerbook's drive. I had to pull the sucker out, which completely destroyed the CD. On another note, Best Buy has an 'exclusive' code inside of their Foo CDs for a free unreleased track download. However, it's a download from Napster. I'm not going to use a PC, download new software and register with napster just for a song that wasn't good enough to put on the album. Anybody want my free napster song? For that matter, does anybody who read this Apple page even use napster? First come, first serve.
June 14 2005 at 5:48 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyDon't Buy The CD, if you have a ipod! I saw the itunes price, and went and got the "real" store Cd. The cd worked fine in my car, but when i got back to work. the cd started a program, it asks you to agree to some terms, then the screen goes black you see a photo of the foo fighters. from here it downloads the Digital Keys?. so now it will play the music, but only in the special windows media player. http://www.sunncomm.com/support/sonybmg/ Can I transfer MediaMax digital audio files to my iPod? Apple's proprietary technology doesn't support secure music formats other than their own, and therefore the secure music file formats on this disc can't be directly imported into iTunes or iPods. While these discs aren't currently compatible with iTunes or iPod, we are actively working on an acceptable solution, and have reached out to Apple in hopes of addressing this issue. To help speed this effort, we ask that you use the following link to contact Apple and ask them to provide a solution that would easily allow you to move content from protected CDs into iTunes or onto your iPod: http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipod.html Even though there is no direct support on the disc for iTunes or iPod, SONY BMG has worked out a way for consumers to move content into these environments, despite the challenges noted above. If you'd like more information on how to move content to iTunes please CLICK HERE. Anyone know how i turn these wma files into mp3 or anything i can play on my ipod. ? i didn't care about DRM untill today. i hate the music industry...
June 14 2005 at 5:45 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAnd on the Norwegian music store you can't get any foo fighters. :(
June 14 2005 at 4:41 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWell, I guess I'll have to let you know if the offline CD (plus DVD?) has those interviews, since iTMS hasn't arrived in Brazil yet. By the way, Foo Fighters really rock!
June 14 2005 at 3:54 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAnother problem is that the Foo album just isn't very good, if you ask me. But charging more than stores hurts. I'd much rather buy a CD, DRM-free, for less than I could download it. Sure, I have to stop in a store. But I pass a dozen to and from work evry day. It's no decision to save $8 by stopping, and getting a physical CD. I still love buying CDs, I like just having something physical to have in my collection.
