DittyBot

DittyBotDittyBot was featured on Attack of the Show last night (which was guest co-hosted by Peter 'Engadget Man' Rojas)  and it blew my mind. Some folks feel that Automator is a solution waiting for a problem, but the man behind DittyBot has used Autmator to create a very cool workflow.

Using Skype, iTunes, SoundFlower, and an email account DittyBot allows you to text message your email account with a song name. DittyBot checks your email, sees the text message and looks for the song in your iTunes library. If it is found he creates a playlist and then dials your cellphone using Skype. Once you answer your phone DittyBot pipes the sound from iTunes (playing the song you requested) into Skype which then sends it to your phone.

This, guys and gals, is very cool.

Maybe I'm just seeing things here, but does that DittyBot image in the story above look a little familiar to anyone else? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goatse Maybe I've just been surfing the web too much...

The building where I work has terrible FM reception. There's a certain DJ that I like to listen to in the morning but it's virtually impossible to get the station in. I setup streaming audio from a radio plugged into an old G3 I have. The annoying part was I was never able to change the channel. I bought a RadioShark recently and this allowed me to change channels from SSH and VNC, but that's not always the best way to go about it. With a modification of this solution I potentially email in the freq I want to be tuned into. I may finally have a reason to brush up on my AppleScript programming and finally jump into something more complicated with Automator! OK, I'm not sure that I should be as excited as I am to give this a whirl...

Guess you had to see it! Personally, I tune into G4TV every once and a while and it just so happens this time, I noticed they were using a powerbook, which grabbed my attention. The whole song retrieving sequence was very cool, but a little glitchy on the show. They also tried to portray it as an easy thing to do, but you shoulda seen that Automator script! I believe that they said on the show that DittyBot has the ability to synch other things in this fashion too, like email and stuff. It just matters how you program it. Basically it's like remote desktop via cell phone, and that could be very useful to some people.

I'm not sure of the point of this either... but I have to admit to being pretty impressed. But it's too much effort to set up. And I'm not sure I'd really be able to impress my friends with it, they'd just look at me funny. And if I can't impress people with it, I just can't be bothered.

I'm big on pointless, Rube Goldburg applications... Though, I got excited when I thought the post title was "Dirty Bot"...a guy can dream, right?

The whole pointlessness of it is what makes it cool to me. Of course, I'm an odd little man.

Sounds like a Rube Goldberg way of playing music through your phone. Seems rather pointless to me, but if that's how you want to hear your music far be it from me to say you shouldn't. Me? I'll be over here with my iPod.
