Henrico County dumping iBooks for $50 each
That was then: "The Henrico County Public School system has teamed with Apple Computers and launched the Teaching and Learning Initiative by deploying Apple iBook laptops to all high school and middle school students and staff. The school system’s vision is to close the digital divide by providing computers and Internet access to all students. Henrico’s goal is to demonstrate a new paradigm for teaching and learning that is suitable for 21st century America."
This is now:
"For the past four years, Henrico County high school students, teachers and all staff have been utilizing Apple iBooks under the system’s one-to-one laptop program. The lease agreement for those iBooks is up this year and the Henrico School Board decided to accept a contract from Dell Inc. for the next four years."
Citing maintenance rates that led to too much instructional down time and the need for loaners while machines were being repaired, Henrico dumped Apple earlier this year and jumped into the sandbox with Dell. The middle school and elementary schools get to keep their iBooks, but the highschool students and teachers are getting a Dell.
"One-thousand laptops will be sold at the school warehouse, which is located at 361 Dabbs House Road beside the Eastern Government Center. The laptops will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis. There will be no waiting list. Only cash or checks will be accepted."

As someone in the HCPS program the past 4 years, I can say it will never work. Apple was the scape goat for Henrico County and those who think Dell will be the savior for Henrico will be mistaken. I have graduated, and I will be picking up my own iBook that I used under a different program for $50 too.
Mabey they can use all this money they will make on all the resources they'll need to buy to keep the Dells running as good as the iBooks....

They ran an article on the sale in this AM's paper. (Richmond Times Distpatch):
"1,000 laptops will go on sale for $50 each on a first-come, first-served basis at 9 a.m. on Aug. 9 at the school warehouse, 361 Dabbs House Road, beside the county's Eastern Government Center.
There's a one-per-person limit, and only cash or checks will be accepted.
The PowerPC 750s are white and feature a 12-inch screen, 320 megabytes of memory, Mac OS 10.2.8 and AppleWorks 6.2.9, according to Henrico schools."
I think I'll pick one up for the heck.

I just don't get this at all. Why leave money on the table by selling these so cheap? These are going for over 4x this amount on eBay. Why not at least offer the option for outsiders to pay $75 or $100 to have one shipped?

i went to henrico county's website for info in iBook sale. The iBooks are PowerPC 750, 500MHz, 320MB Memory, 10GB HD, 12-inch screen, with charger, wireless card, and OSX 10.2.8. Don't know what the drive is (CD? Combo?). Pretty old, though.

It'd be interesting to compare the maintenance rates after a few years with dell. I guess they were breaking more often than expected, but when they're being lugged around by school kids you've got to plan for some downtime.

Just wait until they need to remove the spyware and viruses off those Dell computers 24/7. The few iBook breakdowns will seem like child's play [pun intended] in comparison. My school districts server has been down for the last three weeks as they try to get everything cleared up in time for school next month. By the way my 30 Mac lab is running fine thank you.

I totally have to agree with Steve.
They made a correction to their earlier report of 10 to 15 percent of the computers being out at any given time because of maintenance... it was more like 5%.
I guarantee they will be plagued with problems with these Dells.

i'm sure glad that my parents live near there! i'm going to have them pick me up at least 2 (i'll see if they can get my sister to go with them and get 3 because of the 1 per person rule).
Then i'll have them ship them to me in Florida!
i'm glad my parents live less than 2 hrs from the place and they'd be willing to go there for me! (i talked to my mom this morning).
Good luck to everyone going to get one. I wonder how many people are going to show up to get these!!??

Has anyone actually rung this guy up and asked if he'll ship them, or are they insisting on selling them for cash on the day? I live in England, and to be honest I bet it'd probably be worth buying a ticket on a plane and flying all the way over there just to pick up a bunch and sell em on ebay!
If they think they're gonna get an easier life with the Dells than the iBooks they've clearly been smoking somthing!
P.S. How funny is the guy asking "what spec are these"! They're $50!!!!!
