Unofficial Yahoo Weblog gets in on new Yahoo Mail beta

After acquiring Oddpost, who had an impressive webmail interface that predated Gmail by a couple years, Yahoo's been talking about a significant upgrade for a while now, and it looks like they aim to deliver. Features like drag-and-drop messages and a desktop-like interface, along with quotes from Brad like "Gmail is suddenly looking a little clunky" are making me think twice about leaving my Yahoo account banished to the spam-collection end of my tool belt. Go check out Brad's review, and if it whets your appetite enough, sign yourself up for their beta test to (eventually) get in on the fun.

September 15 2005 at 9:09 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyPlease, lets clear things up here... POP vs. IMAP ? Not even a question, there is *no* challenge. POP is a tool to get your mail off a server. True, you can leave it there, but that is not a real server storage option. IMAP: true server storage with folder support. Bi-directional functionality (you can upload mail from your Microsoft Outlook, Thunderbird or Apple Mail clients to your IMAP account). Header downloading for faster mail preview... So much more functionality. Google uses Linux technology (mbox or maildir, I don't remember now), a (simple and productive) webmail interface to it, and provides a POP implementation for those willing to download mail to their usual desktop clients. Now, concerning this Yahoo interface, it looks great. I don't plan on opening yet another account to try it out, but this looks like it is probably the best attempt at a desktop-like webmail. Another good one come with the windows MDaemon server, their webmail interface has a fantastic Lookout skin.

You can use thunderbird or mail or outlook to view it on your own comp and you still have a nice gmail interface if you need to view stuff on the road or at another person's computer.
September 14 2005 at 9:26 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replywho cares gmail = free pop mail... Yahoo is still my junk mail account and always will be shiney interface or not.
September 14 2005 at 5:26 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhile gmail is a very nice step away from hotmail and the rest, I must say that there are no web-based email clients that I really enjoy using. From the sound of things this is the closest thing to a desktop client experience in the webmail market. I'll have to keep my eyes on this one.
