Google Talk temporarily broken for iChat users
For those who care: Barb Dybwad over at The Social Software Weblog has picked up on the fact that, at least temporarily, Google Talk isn't playing with iChat users. The company isn't offering much in the way of an explanation, but I'll just chalk that up to them working "round the clock!" to get what limited iChat support they offer back up to speed. On a somewhat related note, Barb also brings up another good point making its way around the net: Google's inadvertently defensive use of the term "beta" on virtually every service they offer is really starting to dilute the meaning. One of these days that "you can't yell at us cuz it's in beta" barrier is going to finally crumble, which I hope will force these companies to hire on a few more QA personnel.

Isn't "beta" the new-media word for R&D which is ultimately a tax dodge?

OK, I was beginning to think it was something I did in iChat. I find it odd that it initially worked without a problem but suddenly died with an SSL error. Random.

If you download the Windows version, you'll see it's version 1.0.0.64.

Yes, I for one am getting very tired of so much of Google' stuff being "Beta." Stand behind your products, people.

Fuddes.. take a closer look at that pic. Google's site, app logo and the image you linked all have "beta" right next to the product name.
Just because an application has passed the 1.0 mark doesn't mean it can't be in beta.

QA is not why they refer to things as being in beta. Because they're a public company, products that are released must, ultimately, go toward improving revenue. While products are in beta, they have more leeway with shareholders.
