New iMac G5 with Frontrow and remote
Apple has gone and changed the iMac into a Media Mac. And they said it couldn't be done! Actually, they said it should have been done a few years ago, but it is here now so let's be happy about that. The big ticket additions:
- Build in iSight
- Remote control
- Modest speed bumps (1.9 and 2.1 GHz G5's)
- Frontrow (an alternate UI for OS X)
- Photobooth (an iSight powered app)
- Mighty Mouse bundled
Check out all of the specs and see for yourself.

So can you buy FrontRow for use on a Mac Mini (or any other older mac)????

I've got the same question as Mark? Can we pop this app out into our Mac Mini's which we will be hooking up behind our HDTVs?
Then, can I now import my ripped DVDs that are in mpeg4 format into iTunes, so I can view them from the new FrontROw app?

WTF? They missed the boat on this frontrow thing. Why have it attached to the imac only? Why not have it a stand alone that could be, say, used with the mac mini sitting on top of my tv? Duh!

It's been upgraded to PCI-Express, too, with a faster vid card.

umm i don't think the mini has an ir port so's that you can use the remote, which seems to be, ummm important for frontrow to work.
maybe there'll be a usb attachment w/remote made available so's that other mac folk can use it too.

"The simple six-button Apple Remote gives you control over your music, movies and photos from anywhere in the room — and it stows away neatly (and magnetically) on the side of your iMac when not on." Magnets, near a computer? Another first from Apple!

Anyone else notice that the eMac went away?

This isn't a first for Apple w/magnets near the computer -- check out the magnetic latches on all the portables. Also, don't all speakers have magnets in them?
What seems to be missing from this new "media center" iMac is a tv tuner. Why didn't they go all the way and just make this a real home entertainment centerpiece w/DVR capability, too? Get rid of your tv, your tivo, your stereo (just keep your speakers) -- let the iMac do it all. And you can still use it as your computer w/a wireless keyboard and mouse. I guess that's all a little ways off...

Wow, yeah the eMac is MIA...
What I think is more interesting is that they have taken the 56k modem out, it s gone form the new iMac. I feel this is a similar step to Apple dropping the floppy in the original bondi-blue iMac. Eventually 56k modems will be dropped from the entire range ( I believe), this is another sign of Apple being ahead of the times.

When the G5 iMac first came out, I thought it looked awesome, because the lack of cords. The Bluetooth keyboard and mouse made the thing sort of magical.
Apple really needs to come out with a Bluetooth MightyMouse. It looks like a step backwards in the iMac photos to see that cord there.
Also, I think they should push iWork by providing the full and permanent version of it, and stop bundling AppleWorks.

Does anyone else think that having the iSight built into the iMac is foreshadowing a feature destined for ibooks and powerbooks? The idea of having an iSight built right into my laptop is quite appealing.

Does anyone have the Bluetooth Apple keyboard with a MightyMouse plugged into it? Will that combo work?

I bought my iMac 20" in June, when the *old* new batch got out. I wanna cry...
Even if I wouldn't use that much the iSight (shy), 2.1Ghz isn't that much from my 2.0. Front Row, I would gladly take it. I'm often watching some shows, and movies on my iMac from my bed so the remote control would of been nice. The mighty mouse would also be cool. My brother bought one and it's nice.
Oh well, too bad. I knew there would be a new batch someday, but i didn't think it would be so soon.

I recently purchased a 17 inch imac that has a 2GHZ processor. Now the new imac has a 1.9GHZ, which seems like a speed drop and NOT speed bump. Am I missing something, or is my old imac faster than the one replacing it?

Any idea why this and many other of the "one more thing" posts didn't end up in the RSS feed? I had to find out about all of the new treats through inter-post links. I refreshed the feed even, and the same ones just aren't there. I hope I am not missing other news as well on account of using the RSS feed versus the homepage. (I use Safari w/ RSS.)

Your 2.0 GHz was the high end. Now 1.9 GHz is the low end of processors available

like ipods, the remote control battery will last for 2 years. Then you have to send it back to apple for a replacement.
This strikes me as madness - they got considerable bad press for the ipod saga - mind you, it hasn't affected sales so far. Won't stop me buying one (as it's a bonus rather than must-have for me)
