iTunes Music Store name change?

itunes_logoThose crazy kids at 37signals, the Web 2.0ish company that has brought you Basecamp, Backpack, Writeboard, and Ta-da, are thinking deep thoughts about the iTunes Music Store's brand. The iTunes Music Store makes sense when you're selling only music but since 4.8 you could get videos, and now you can even buy them.

Does the name even make sense anymore? Sure, the vast majority of offerings on the iTMS consist of music, but as time goes by I am sure we will see more TV shows, music videos, and dare I say it, movies.

How would you rename the iTunes Music Store? I would name it George and I would love it and hug it and squeeze it and pet it.

It would seem smart to seperate out the two stores into the two apps they already have for handling these two independant media types: iTunes and iMovie. iTunes would have the iTunes Music Store and would handle all things music (including videos) iMovie would have iMovie Video Store and would handle all TV shows, movie sales but could also include videos. Granted, fixing up iMovie to be a library might take another revision, and the two stores should be able to talk to each other, but those are small details. I personally don't like that I can load a video in iTunes. I keep that content seperate on my machine, because i want iTunes reserved for music-only. But it seems like seperating the two out makes a whole lot more sense. I guess this is why places like Amazon.com are not called "bookstore.com" when they first open.

Thanks for pointing out the version number error, Jon. I fixed it, and I gave you a star to boot. Now aren't you glad you didn't mock me in your comment... wait a second... ;)

iMedia is the obvious choice, but some broadband carrier called Terayon ownes imedia.com. I would be surprised to see Apple change the name of the store to iMedia without owning the imedia.com domain. Apple's latest brandings have been names like Front Row, Apple Remote, Photo Booth, iPod nano, iPod shuffle, Pages, etc. I can't recall the last time Apple branded something iWhatever, which may be a sign that has run its course. Based on Apple's recent naming trends, iTunes could get renamed something like Media and iTMS would be Media Store. Personally, I like the iLife brandings except for GarageBand, which doesn't fit with the other brands (iTunes, iMovie, iDVD).

I'm with Pedro, just leave it alone. It's only young and needs time to grow up to be big and strong, no need for all the name-calling :-) Cheers; Poncho

how about they just leave it alone and those people who have a problem with the name can just get over it.
