Adam Curry: Wiki changer?

The PodfatherAdam Curry, also known as the Podfather, is one of the biggest names in podcasting today. He does Apple's Podfinder podcast, and his own Daily Source Code, as well as a podcasting show on satellite radio.

The history of who invented podcasting, and who popularized it has been contentious, and it seems it is getting even worse. Roger Cadenhead reports that someone using an IP address that Mr. Curry controls has been making major changes to the podcasting entry in Wikipedia, pumping up Mr. Curry's contributions whilst down playing others.

Say it ain't so, Mr. VJ!

Thanks to fra for the tip!

UPDATE: Adam has responded via, what else, a podcast.

History is written by the winners. I suspect that the more popular the wikipedia gets the more manipulation of it we will see. Think about the cost and effort it would take to manipulate a dozen or so entries in the wikipedia vs. the cost and effort of producing and airing a TV commercial.

FWIV, Curry is also one of the earliest cybersquatters - he registered MTV.com, with their permission, but refused to relinquish the domain when he left them. This led to a messy brawl and an eventual settlement. I don't know (or care) what his involvement was in the genesis of podcasting, but the guy definitely has an inflated ego. Goes with the territory, I guess.

Isn't that the point of Wikis. that anyone can change them? There's a little thing called editorial control wot could fix that.

Adam Curry has done more to popularize podcasts than anybody else. His ego is as big as his hair, but us would be podcasters who want to do this "podcast thing" for a living look up to him and I trust him to create opportunities for small podcasters to make their dream come true using his Podshow portal. I think he is a good guy. He deserves credit for his hard work.

If you read the comments on the linked post, you'll see reference to his admission of making the edits, and his claims of ignorance (he didn't know how to use a wiki). So, um, I'm not sure which is worse -- purposefully trying to alter the record of podcasting history, or doing it accidentally because you didn't know you can press "cancel" instead of "submit" when you screw up a wiki article.

Hey listen to his podcast from today, Daily source code #290. He talks a lot about what's happening there and more or less downplays his role rather than the other way around.
