New WebKit Web Inspector

Check out the new HUD on the Safari WebKit: the Web Inspector.

According to Surfin' Safari, "The Web Inspector lets you browse the live DOM hierarchy in a compact HUD style window, catering to the needs of web developers and WebKit hackers alike."

It looks pretty cool, but you'll have to update your tree or download the nightly build to use it, and if you don't know what any of that means, perhaps you should just run along and play with the other kids on the Internets, mmm-kay?

As pt pointed out anyone can use the nightly build.

First go to this address:
http://nightly.webkit.org/builds/

Download.
Run. There is no step 3.

Keep in mind, the nightly is not a substitute for the stable build that comes via Software Update. Nightlys are by their very nature unstable. Hence, nightly changes. However, it is in the nightlies that all the nifty things of the future can be found e.g. the new inspector palette.

Think of the nightly as your crystal ball into the world of the only Apple app that is developed in the open. Like all crystal balls you must use it with care.

Don't be afraid to try it out. The worst that can happen is that you're using the nightly and it crashes with 30 tabs open. :) Just DO NOT delete your stable Safari and replace it with a nightly. You can tell the difference between the stable and the nightly by just looking at the icon. Stable has a silver bezel. Nightly has a gold bezel.

Have fun. C.K. don't be an elitist snob. People hate that about us. I say this as a long time elitist snob. :)

Man, you're really on a roll, CK. "If you don't know what that is, you should run along and play?" How about this instead -- I DO know what that is, but have never really felt it necessary to keep track of a build. However, this is interesting enough for me (and probably others) to learn how. So instead of being a prick about it, how about a link to someplace with the relevant instructions, or -- crazy though -- just link to the nightly build page? Turns out it's not rocket science.

That's two irritating posts in one day, and I haven't even caught up on the feed yet. Don't turn into MacSlash.

Looks cool and could be useful -- if it wasn't so hideously slow.
