C.K. thought we had posted on this already, but neither of us could find the post so, here goes: DownloadSquad
picked up on a quiet new feature in iTunes 6.0.2: sharing video (along with audio) on a
local network. Fortunately, it sounds like you don't have to do anything aside from enabling sharing in your
preferences. DLS also picked up on an odd quirk: videos purchased in 6.0.1 can't be played on 6.0.2 machines, which is surprising to me because I thought DRM'd content couldn't be played through sharing on other machines no matter what. Either way this is a great new feature, and the original digg post DLS found this at brings up all the media center and video-enabled AirPort Express rumors, which I'll just let y'all tackle in the comments.

I sure hope Apple comes out with an Airport Express with DVI or HDMI. Since I can't easily put my computer next to my TV, streaming my audio and video would be great. Even greater would be if Apple includes a remote and Front Row, so I could control my compter via the Airport.

DRM'd content can be played via sharing if the other machine is authorized for that iTMS account.

I have tried iTunes 6.0.2's 'Convert for iPod' feature ( http://www.tuaw.com/2006/01/11/itunes-6-0-2-does-automatic-video-conversion-without-quicktime-p/ ) on several movies--4 at home, 3 at work, all from different sources, all play fine in QuickTime--and every one of them looked fine but they all became silent, both in iTunes and on my iPod. Anyone else experiencing this?

Brian: that most likely means those videos don't have truly two separate audio and video tracks. Some formats/codecs flatten movies like that, and it isn't a good thing because it causes problems like the one you're having.
Where are you getting them? What format are they in? Do you by chance know what codec was used to originally encode them? If it's P2P stuff, you might not have much of an option, which is what drives some people (like me) to try and find this stuff through other venues; there's just way too many P2P users out there who don't actually get any of this stuff and they use all the wrong software to create/share their content.
Just my .02. So what format are your files? Maybe we can help.

When did this become a tech support forum? This isn't even related to this particular topic.

To get the videos added to iTunes before 6.02, you must re-add them. See http://www.reelsmart.com/2006/01/18/itunes-tip-26-itunes-602-also-adds-video-sharing-but/ for more info.

LD--it's kind of related--it's a 6.0.2 thing. The "video doesn't play" thing reminded me and I thought I'd see if anyone else ran into it--a common occurrence in "new software" threads.
DC--thanks. Muxed/demuxed sounds (ha) like a likely culprit. Yeah, I got'em online, so I'm kinda stuck. I think ffmpegx will work, but iTunes is easier. hopefully it'll be fixed in the future.

That is why I gave up peer-to-peer, Brian. Too many files that, if they download fully at all, have something wrong with them.
I am very happy with my iTMS downloads of television shows, mainly Battlestar Galatica. My only complaint is that the store needs more more video content. Surely, there is a way to convince the studios to let older movies be sold there.
BTW, don't let LD bother you. He is on another thread trying to tell a lawyer what the law is. Imagines himself some kind of enforcer at TUAW, apparently.

Now if FrontRow would include shared content in addition to the local content.
