Disney to Buy Pixar?

When the rumor surfaced last week that Disney might be interested in buying Pixar, I passed it off as just another rumor, along the lines of "Sony to buy Apple" or "Microsoft to buy Fort Knox". But multiple news organizations are reporting today that the all-stock deal may actually be approved and happen as early as tomorrow and that it may be worth as much as $7 billion.

As Steve Jobs has a majority share in Pixar, this would be incredibly significant for Mr. Jobs but might also be significant for Mr Jobs' other company, Apple Computer.

Could this mean there might be more Apple-Disney partnerships in the future? Disney videos for sale via the iTunes store? Disney-branded iPods? iPod-friendly audio guides at the Disney parks?

At the very least, a Disney-Pixar combination should be able to improve the animated offerings coming from Disney, which have been less-than-stellar in the last few years.

Disney-branded iPods?? You mean big, stupid red plastic iPods with mouse ears that match those TVs and VCRs from Disney that Circuit City sells? I shudder....

Apple Computer can't record or distribute music, remember. That's why iTunes has all those different countries in the store. Any cross-over, and Apple Music will sue them. But, Disney owns all kinds companies that record, mix, distribute, and market their own brands of music. One man is running the show, but not one corporation. Might be an interesting addition that would benefit both companies dramatically.

IF the sale goes through, Jobs only gets a seat on the board. Nothing more. Becoming CEO -or- Chairman would divert too much attention from his duties at Apple.

There are more than enough capable people at Pixar and Apple to spur the seamless integration such a buyout would create. I'm looking forward to the sale and the new, improved relationship.

With the upcoming revamped Sony Connect site, that will make available Sony's GInormous content holdings to the PSP, Steve J is aligning himself with the other great media house, with access to Disney, ABC and ESPN that could compete with Sony. Thats my take.

Steve will not become the CEO of Disney BUT there is a VERY good chance that if this deal goes through that he will become the chairman of the board. The current chairman is only going to stay on until a replacement is found and if Disney does purchase Pixar I believe they just found their replacement.

I can tell you that Steve Jobs will not be moved to CEO of the Walt Disney Company if this deal is complete. Bob Iger is our current CEO and will be for a while at least by contract. Bob has done some great things and this deal is just one of them.

Dear Tom if what you say is true re your retirement stock, then you are at grave risk of not having much to live on old age or work until you drop dead. Diversify that portfolio now, don't put all your eggs in one basket otherwise it'll end in tears.

Finally, keep disney away from pixar please!

One such news story suggested that the deal, if it happens, would leave Jobs the largest single Disney shareholder ... probably a good thing for Apple relations if that is far as it goes. But what if Jobs were to become CEO at the magical kingdom?

Managing Pixar and Apple is one thing, managing a beast like Disney would have to mean leaving Apple to (who?) another's less capapble hands. I fear the consequences of that possibility ... not just for my favorite fruity computer company, but for AAPL stock, where all of my retirement funds are invested.

Personally, I hope the rumors are wrong.
