Apple's remote controls more than FrontRow
Mat on Macs has recently made a discovery: The
Apple remote that shipped with his iMac can be used to control more than FrontRow. Specifically, he found that
play/pause, chapter forward/back and 4x fast forward/back all work with DVD Player (play and pause even work if DVD
Player is not the frontmost application). Also, his remote worked with Quicktime Player and adjusted the system volume.
That's pretty cool. Now I want one of those iMacs even more.

Is there some sort of API for the remote? It would be so cool to have for instance apps like coverflow or maybe even games (who knows) to be controlled with this little gem.

It uses bluetooth, it shows the song info and the artwork in itunes and the best part is that the battery on your cell can be recharged!!! I mean the battery for the apple one is what, like 2.99. I love my Nokia 3650 and Sailing clicker!!! It is the best way to go. I don't work for them either.

The only problem I have found is the remote tries to control both at the same time (unless you put the dock out of Line of Sight of the IR sensor in the iMac), making the IR in the universal dock kinda useless as the iMac is opening Front Row while the dock is switching to a new song.

No sign of that there on the latest edition PB G4 1.67 HiRes. All that preference area gives me access to is: Firevault, PW for wake from sleep/scr, disable auto login, pw to unlock secure prefs, log out after n min of inactivity, secure virtual memory.
Uh.... isn't Front Row a front end to DVD player and iTunes et al? OF COURSE it is going to work with the DVD player. Otherwise all it would do is flip those icons around in a circle and bounce through whatever menus Front Row might provide that are not part of THE APPS WHICH COMPRISE IT.

January 30 2006 at 5:41 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySomeone mentioned you can sleep the iMac/MacBook by holding down the play/pause button, so for completeness I'll add that it can be used to wake a sleeping Mac as well.
In fact, this goes a long way to explain why Apple went to the trouble of equipping the newer Macs (and maybe all Macs from now on) with infrared receivers, instead of using a Bluetooth remote as many "experts" claimed they should have done.
That is, so that they can be turned on while in standby/sleep mode, just like a device such as a VCR. This makes them ideal for home theater type uses and presentations.
IR is also much less hassle to setup (pairing etc) than Bluetooth, is probably more responsive (my Sony Ericsson phone + Salling Clicker never seems quite as fast to respond) and the line of sight nature is less unlikely to interfere with other equipment (eg, controlling a Mac in the next room).
Sometimes it seems, Apple knows what it's doing!
Minor correction, the remote will allow you to choose a netboot drive, but you have to use the Option key at power on to get this choice. Actually, it will allow you to cycle through all the bootable "drives" that Open Firmware/EFI find...
Cool in a nearly useless and stupid kind of way. ;o)
What I want to know about the remote is this: When will someone come out with a low cost clone or a universal remote that handles the same remote codes as this remote?
We all know how many remotes there are out there. And at $29 this thing is overpriced if you have a universal dock.
I'm all for Apple design and quality but the price of this remote is laughably high.
