Gmail integrated Google Talk support for Safari
You may have heard that Google Talk has
been integrated into Gmail, making it a web application. This is very cool in my opinion, however, Safari
(surprise, surprise) isn't supported at the moment. It is true that I can just use this nifty new feature in Firefox
(or any of the other Mozilla derived browsers) but luckily Safari support is being worked on, so one day I will be GTalkin' and
Safari-in' at the same time.Share

I just had a HTTPS Gmail chat a couple minutes ago in Mac Firefox (hope Safari support comes soon).

To access Gmail with https, always connect to https://mail.google.com/ to login. It'll keep you on a https connection after logging in.
Gmail (and G-talkin') acceptance is still miserably low, especially considering how many eyeballs Google has. I still don't have any friends/contacts with a gmail account. They really need to address this. Seems Google is just waiting for people to catch on (like they did with search). I don't think it's gonna happen on its own.
P.S. I miss side-talkin'
djones - that's not a bad idea. I might just try that. I've yet to use SkypeOut yet - never needed it.
I just wanted to do everything via computer, however, to show them it's easy and free. Can't even get my IT Support Dude brother to use Skype on his home PC.
umijin, call their landline with Skype from your computer. That's what it took to get my family on.

However, I'm not certain you can send video signals in this way or even how well it works. I can't get my family back in the US to use Macs or even Skype. I might have a chance with Google Talk.
"Another network, with far fewer users like Google Talk, just isn't a compelling choice."
Except for the fact that you can have impulse communication when you see that someone in address book is online with gmail running in the background (or even just having a toolbar on). Get video with this, and then we'll really be talkin'. Apple ichat has been too buggy, and some competition from Skype and Google Chat would be great.
Until Google Talk can work with the AOL Instant Messenger standard, it's hard for me to care about this. I've been using AIM for years, all my friends use it, my family uses it. Another network, with far fewer users like Google Talk, just isn't a compelling choice.
