Costco selling the 20" iMac G5 at discount
A Mac User Group email list that I'm on noticed that Costco of all places (think: Sams Club competitor) is selling the
20" iMac G5 with iSight for $1479.99. While the machine is listed on their site, they instruct customers to
check their local stores for available stock; it looks like they don't have any available for web order.Aside from Costco beating out Apple by $20, I think it's a little strange that the iMac is the only machine they seem to carry. A search at their website for "mac" returns nothing but a few software packages (including Quicken 2006 for Mac for $60 with a $20 rebate), but "imac" actually returns this one lone model they're selling. There's no word on how long they'll be carrying these machines, but with the rate that PowerPC based machines are disappearing, I'd recommend you pick one up while they're hot if you're interested.
[UPDATE: Wow, this price is even better than I thought. Turns out that $1479 includes a 3-year AppleCare program. Run, don't walk! Thanks Derek!]

When asked (at the Folsom, CA Costco) the Costco rep said they will be selling the Mac Minis shortly as well as Intel IMacs. Not sure if the 3 yr Apple Care will be included. Costco....home of the $100 loaf of bread! My favorite store!
March 09 2006 at 11:11 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI bought an iMac at Costco in Memphis Friday 3/3/06. $1480 with Applecare. There were maybe 10 or so left on a pallet. The Applecare is probably what pushed me over the edge to buy. I wasn't really looking to get a new Mac but......Oh well.
The return info is good to hear also. I alway liked Costco better than Sam's anyway.
As a Costco Marketing Rep. I wanted to set things staight. Costco provides a 100% Member Satisfaction Guarantee on all products they sell including the Membership; the only exception I am aware of is on computers which is limited to six months. The key is Member Satisfaction vs any other form or guarantee such as lifetime, one year, etc. If you purchase a product from Costco and are not satisfied you should return it. Usually you will know if you are satisfied with in several months of a purchase. To make a return when you are totally satisfied with the product; but now they have a newer, better, more advanced product is not a reason for making a return. This type of activity is costly to everyone.
As for retunrs after a number of years I always explain it this way. Say I purchased a gadget and a reliable source like Consumers Report states that the gaget should last eight - ten years. If after five years the gadget goes bad by all means return it; but if the gadget made it to life expectancy of eight years suck it up and buy a new one.
Sweet deal, but you are all going to be kicking yourself in 6 months for not getting the Intel iMac.
Spend the extra $$, its worth it :)
I saw these last Friday at the Costco in Superior, CO (northwest of Denver). I was shocked, and then saw they came with AppleCare too. They had a stack of them.
March 02 2006 at 12:30 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhen I saw these at my local Costco, I bought one, took it home, and didn't open it. I waited. I put my 13mon old rev A. iMac G5 1.8 20" on craigslist and sold it in one day for 1200, then I put the applecare on ebay for $150. So lets do the math... $130 for a nice upgrade (isight, front row, videoRAM, DVD-DL)!!! Macs may be more expensive, but wow, they hold there value. I love Costco
March 02 2006 at 12:58 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyPicked one up from the Costco in Commack (Long Island) an hour ago. Confirming the three-year-Apple-warrantee, the six-month Costco return policy, and price etc.
March 01 2006 at 7:56 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySaving $190 isn't enough to get me to buy an iMac G5 instead of the Intel version. Intel iMacs represent a better long-term investment.
March 01 2006 at 6:39 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAmazon.com has the 20" Intel Based iMac with a $150 mail in rebate.
