More "iPhone" rumors

The web's abuzz with more speculation about the so-called "iPhone," Apple's supposed up-and-coming moto-killing music-playin' bad boy phone. First off, Barron's Online (subscription required) quotes an analyst who believes the iPhone is right around the corner, and last week Piper Jaffaray said there's a 75% chance of an iPhone showing up "in the next 12 months." Add to that the comments by a J.P. Morgan analyst who says "the chatter about the product is all over the food chain" and this article that claims an Apple iPhone could hurt Motorola, and it almost seems like we're so confident it exists, we don't even need Apple to introduce it.

Whatever. Read MacRumors' recap and decide yourself if this is a bunch of hoo-haa, or if we can really expect an Apple-branded cell phone sometime soon.

Update: I should clarify something: We know the image is fake. We never intended to pass it along as a possible leak. It's basically become the Gold Standard for "iPhone" rumor images, and that's why I used it here. Sorry for the confusion.

Number 10 is bang on. iCreate magazine in the UK often features products they would like to see. That article (not ad) dates back to 2003. The second issue of iCreate featured the iPod DV which was a cross between a 3G iPod and iSight. The title of the page (and cut off the image above) reads "What if Apple made..."

The photo is in fact an old one, from the earliest of Apple iPhone rumors, around 2k1 (hence Garamond still being used, its on my Cube box!!)

Also, for you sadcases like me, the keypad is straight from a Sony Ericsson T610

Who's to say that if Apple went along the mobile phone route Motorola wouldn't have a part in it? It's unlikely that having worked with them on the iTunes phones they would walk away or go into direct competion with them. MVNO's need phones from a variety of manuafctuers not just one to survive.

Photo is a fake. Apple hasn't used Garamond as their marketing typeface for years. They gradually phased it out; no reason to bring it back after establishing their new typeface.

(Would I buy Apple phone service? After using .Mac, no way. Apple doesn't know how to reliably run the services they sell now!)

The rumor is that Apple is going to be an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator). This means you'd sign the contract with Apple and get one of their phones. Apple is so proprietary and vertically integrated, I'd really doubt they'd offer their hardware to other operators.

Being an MVNO prevents Apple having to set up a cellular network. Instead, they'd lease bandwidth from Verizon or Cingular and run their own service on it.

I wonder if such a phone would be available for use with different carriers, or if Apple would be exclusive with only one (I hope it would Verizon)?

It's a hoax. You will need to establish a complete new department that only does the mobile stuff...

Won't happen. At least not in 2006.
