Softbank shoots down rumors of iPhone, Apple partnership
Three cheers for more rumor drama. At least this latest installment is coming from a legitimate source: Softbank, the company Walt Mossberg cited is working with Apple to create the much sought-after 'iPhone'.Softbank released a statement (in Japanese) that they are in deed not working with Apple on the phone. I guess we'll have to wait a day or two for MacRumors to cough up contradictory information from an 'anonymous source'.

Actually, that's not really what Softbank said. All they said was that they denied releasing the information.

Babelfish translates it thusly:
"Placing on the news media of portion of 2006 May 13 date, there was this corporation and reporting regarding the American apple computer, but these are the guess article by the news media. The agency it decides the contents which are reported, as this corporation and departure it is not something which is displayed."
Which is surprisingly lucid for machine translated text. The way I read it they're saying is, in essence, that is it not the company's policy to comment on rumors.

Um, when and where did Walt Mossberg cite Softbank as the company helping Apple?
He said they're working on a phone.
Separately, a Japanese new source said that Softbank and Apple are working on a phone.
Softbank is now denying they released this information.
They are not denying the deal.

I agree with Jacob--Mossberg never identified Softbank, that comes from a different source.
