Rig of the Day: The floating iMac

This is fantastic. Flickr user Zennifer has mounted her G5 iMac on a swiveling arm, allowing it to "float" above her desk. I applaud the uncluttered, minimalist beauty of this solution.

If you'd like to see your own rig featured here, simply upload photos into our group Flickr pool. We select one image to highlight each day, and crown a Rig of the Week on Sundays.

I like the iMac on the swivel arm, hate the desk.
In fact, I hate all those desks with a stand for the monitor and stuff like that. I got a really nice, minimalist, yet HUGE desk at IKEA for $50. It's the MICHAEL or MIKAEL (I forget the spelling). Look, here's one on Flickr. http://flickr.com/photos/52299036@N00/128720882/
If you're into Ikea stuff, this is a great workspace.

that is the coolest rig yet, simplicity, and reminds me of my late beloved g4 imac.

And I applaud the proximity of the drinks cabinet :)

The Jerker from Ikea is the best.

I like the idea behind it, it's just a shame the arm isn't a little more attractive. Does anyone know of a wallmount for the G5? I'd love to mount mine on the wall.

Having a great big ugly metal arm coming out of the back of your iMac is less minimilistic than the standard iMac base

Too bad Zennifer has to keep the rig at her Grandma's apartment.
AND...
Since when is a standard issue office swivel-arm the pinnacle of design excellence?

Yes, this isn't fantastic at all. I think this idea has occurred to plenty of iMac owners, and every one of us has rule it out after seeing the available arms. That thing looks horrendous.

I would also add that this set-up renders one level of her desk inaccessible. You've got to be pretty desperate to find any "minimalist beauty" anywhere in that photograph. Excepting the computer itself, of course.

The arm should definitely be in White.

The best Ikea desk has a great name, it's called the "Jerker".
I always thought it would be good to see someone working one one, and say, "So what did you do at work today???"

Reminds me of that CGI water tentacle from the Abyss peering out. Looks like Zennifer might have a bit of a drinking problem...

I think a shiny tubular chrome one (ala the "desk lamp" iMac) would look great!
And there's much nicer looking arms out there...

Does anyone have a mounting workaround the Intel iMac? I'd really like to put it on an arm for ergonomic reasons. (I'm 8 inches taller than my wife)

The desk is pulled out in this so that I could get behind it. Its normally not in that position, and you can't see the arm.
This is how it looks straight on.

Tony C. - Because the iMac weights 25lbs (approx 23 lbs without the base) most of those monitor arms are not strong enough. I can't say I agree with the "nicer" look you think some of those have. But to each their own.
Dan Katz - Grandma's Apartment? How do you know I'm not a grandma! Let me guess - you don't have framed art, you just tape posters to the wall.

Ha! I have the same style of desk (with black shelf/tray) and my 20" iMac G5 (previously an eMac) fits nicely in the middle, with satellite speakers on the side pedestals and a "modest" subwoofer on the bottom. Wouldn't think of using a reticulating arm there tho' being able to trivially reposition it would be cool.
Seeing Zennifer's pristinely uncluttered desk makes me want to completely declutter mine (tho' it's much better now than a few months ago). Heck, the photos only show the power cord connected to the iMac so I wonder what magic she's using to get sound from the speakers. :-D
Btw, what's that other iMac in the background on some other desk?
To desk-hater Chris. This one's near-perfect for its purpose and I use a couple other "minimal" ones, too. When I've previously used just one I've preferred the latter style.

I would love to get a new iMac, but the g4's design is just about the most perfect computer form factor ever. The current iMac stand is a step backwards.
This rig is one solution to the problem. A better solution would be hacking an intel mini into the g4's case. Anyone heard of anyone doing that?
