This is based on VLC, right? Wouldn't it have been infinitely cooler if Google just contributed the code back to VLC?

more importantly, it seems that I don't get an error when trying to buy a Google Video on a Macintosh anymore. Has anyone actually bought anything? When did this happen?

Is this Google lock-in in action.
Am I right in assuming this only works with Google Video sources? Why would I want this when I can play video in Quicktime or Windows MediaPlayer OR other video players?
Or just a reposte to YouTube ?

This is probably no more than just a small webkit based web browser, I hear it's really easy to do in Coccoa, but it shows that Google is at least interested in making applications for the Mac.

I have to agree with #5. I type a search term in the field and all it does is open safari and search there.... don't understand what this is supposed to do. I must be missing something.

GVP lets you download and play movies purchased from the Google Video Store. Before, you could only watch the free films.

I have the same problem as #5 & #9. Seem like I'd have to go to the site and download the video to my drive and then play it. That can't be right. What gives?

I am on a macbook and I still have the same problem outlined in #5 and #9. Maybe this is an issue only on intel machines? All this app does for me is open up safari after I type in a query. Nothing shows up in the player at all. I've reinstalled to no avail.

Find a video you like on google video, the click the download button with the format selector set to window/mac (not iPod or PSP). You'll get a downloaded file that will play within the google video player.

snid: But what's the point of it still? You can view those videos in QuickTime, what's the point of this player?

I compared the iPod download and the google video player download for a video... the iPod formatted one was smaller in filesize and lower in quality than the google video player one.
I'm not saying I like the google video player, I was just answering the question of "what's it do?" that a few people seemed to have.

As someone else said, the point is that this allows you to view purchased movies.

I went looking for a show that I saw on TV last night & there it was! So. Great. It's sitting on my hard drive & I can play it in Google Video Player whenever I want. But, since it's in a ".gvi" file format, I can't get it to play in any other media players. More to the point, I can't do any of the necessary things to it to burn it to a DVD so that I can watch it from my sofa instead of on the computer. (Bearing in mind this is freely available & not piracy.)
