Apple logo on Sony PS3 site a mystery

Joystiq, a sister blog, has been following an odd story about an Apple logo and a Sony PS3 site. As you can see from the image, an Apple logo *blips* at the beginning of a PS3 Flash promo movie at Sony's site (it has since been 'fixed', but Joystiq links to a copy of the original movie here). Their investigation has more or less resulted in dead ends; at first the logo was thought to be a watermark left by creating the movie in a trial version of Shake. As it turns out, trial versions of Shake don't allow saving to begin with.

The issue has turned into a bit of a mystery, as Apple (of course) hasn't made any sort of comment, and Sony apparently promised a statement but has yet to deliver.

In the meantime, we'll forgo speculation and leave the rumoring up to you readers.

Idiots! Look at comment #2. That is exactly what it is. There's no more discussion about trial-versions, etc. Case closed. They stole a video from Apple and in the first 2 frames they faded in the PS3 and the Apple logo was visible briefly. That's IT...forget about it.

Sony Manager: Gez, what on earth were you doing posting a damn Apple logo on our site, don't you check your work?

Sony Web Master: Sir, sorry about not checking my work so throughly before posting it live. I'll make sure I go through a proper Quality Assurance process in future.
... btw hits on the PS3 site are up 150%...

Sony Manager: Really? {{{$$$}}}

According to the engadget comments, it was from the placeholding Apple software box (like Final Cut, etc) that was black. Put black box in front of smoke, then paste PS on top. They just messed it up.

Again, I got that from the engadget post (read it last night - not yet today). Makes sense to me.

So, where did Sony get this Apple video with smoke then? What is the black thing with a white Apple logo? A new iPod? :)

Okay, so suppose you can't save a video is the trial copy of Shake, but that doesn't eliminate a screen recording program from just copying it, or eliminate them downloading the example swf that's been links dozens of times on various blogs (it had to have existed before this.)

The real mistake here is that they could have loaded a small black circle over the logo easily before loading the video and on a layer above it, thus preventing this snafu. The designer may even have intended to do this, but forgot later on and not have noticed his/her mistake.

"and Sony apparently promised a statement but has yet to deliver"

Sony has already debunked this rumor (and had done it BEFORE this TWAW post):

Might it just be that the PS3 will use powerpc technology?

How about this for rabid speculation: The OS for PS3 will be an OSX variant. Sony+Apple to compete with Microsoft. Oooh, yeah....

did you guys even read it? The trial version of Shake doesn't let you save. Unless they used some other software to capture video playback that shake renders on the screen.
