Firefox 2.0 Beta 1 released

Firefox 2.0 Beta 1 has been released and is available for download for Mac (Universal), Windows, and Linux. Our sister site, Download Squad, notes that although there have been reports of this release since Monday, this time it's for real.

Some of the new features in Firefox 2.0 that sound like they're worth checking out are:
  • Built-in anti-phishing protections.
  • Automatic session restoration after a browser crash.
  • The ability to reopen accidentally closed tabs.
  • In-line spell checking that comes in handy when you're filling in forms and other text boxes.
  • Microsummaries of bookmarked pages. Microsummaries are regularly-updated short summaries of web pages. As explained by Mozilla, "When you bookmark a web page that has a microsummary, you can choose to display the microsummary as the title of the bookmark. Then, when the page changes, the title will also change, so you can find out the current status of the page just by looking at the bookmark."
The Mozilla Developer Center has a full list of the new features in Firefox 2.0. Like all betas, this one should be installed with caution. We echo Download Squad's warning to backup bookmarks and settings before installing. And don't be surprised if your Firefox 1.5 extensions no longer work with 2.0.

I use FF 1.5 for Mac right now, experiencing several problems.

1. It seems like bookmark items on the Toolbar cannot recognize Mouse Right Click like on Windows. FF Mac always loads a bookmark item even though my intention is to left click, hold and move those bookmarks around. Windows doesn't do this.

. Also, I can't seem to drag a bookmark onto specific location on the bookmark list on Menu Bar. FF Windows can do this easily.

Any thoughts?! Thanks.

I wouldn't bother with this. I downloaded it and the search bar would not work. It wouldn't accept any add on's either. I then tried to get ride of it and revert to the old version of Firefox and that opened with a huge base panel :(

Now I have no decent working copy of Firefox on my Mac :(

Still no support for color profiles in JPEG images, or other images. Not good. Safari and other Webkit browsers have this.

crashed first thing after opening it. Oh well, its working well now. I think I'll stick with flock or camino for a while. You know what feature would be great? keychain support. They did it for camino, why not do it for firefox or flock, or both?

2.0Beta is much much better. Finally the problem of displaying Chinese characters was fixed.
And the spell check is very nice.

The ever growing RAM issue has been discussed time and time again. It happens with a lot of Carbon applications. It could be Apple fault. ;)

Scott and Jason: Thanks!
Jason; I did what you said and it worked! I am surfing with a warm and fuzzy feeling now.

GM (#27): I've been annoyed at that, too. I'm used to clicking anywhere up there and replacing the URL on my work PC; on my Mac, other than the keyboard solution listed here, I've found clicking on the site icon next to the URL highlights the whole thing. It's a smaller target, but it works.

@GM - type about:config in your address bar.

Right-click the list and create a new booleen value.

Enter browser.urlbar.clickSelectsAll for the value and set to true

Description: When set to true (which is the default), clicking in the address bar automatically highlights all of its contents. If set to false, clicking in the address bar will place a cursor where you click without highlighting any text first.

Sorry about the sarcasm, Tush. It's good to have point of view. If Opera's your thing and you want to point that out, great. What's good is good for all. ;)

On another note, I've noticed the RAM climbs with tab usage in every Fx release. Not sure they will ever fix this to be realistic.
