Unit Conversion plugin for Quicksilver

I don't know how long the Unit Conversion plugin has existed for Qucksilver, but I just found it the other day in yet another one of those 'QS spelunking' adventures that many of its users sometimes embark on (I highly recommend them). They're almost always a good time for Quicksilver fans, as one can usually find something new and incredibly useful on just such an adventure.

This particular Unit Conversion plugin/module allows a user to type the first half of a conversion in the first pane, tab over to chose the 'Convert to Units...' action, then tab to the third pane to type in the final unit conversion type. Clicking the 'i' on this module once it's installed offers a few examples, such as:
  • 1 mile Convert to Units... km
  • 1 floz Convert to Units... cm3
  • 32 ft/sec^2 Convert to Units... m/sec^2
Keep in mind though that the syntax of your conversion is key; the space between the number and the unit type, for example, is required for this operation to perform smoothly. One thing I can't find, however, is exactly how many times of unit conversions this operation can handle, as a document search at Blacktree's site yields nothing. I guess, as with many other Quicksilver toys, some experimentation is in order.

I don't know how long the Unit Conversion plugin has existed for Qucksilver, but I just found it the other day in yet another one of those...

#1: I haven't tried this plugin, but since the denominator for both units is 1 hour, just convert miles to kilometers.

As one commenter has already mentioned, documentation may be found via the drawer accessible via the plug-ins pref pane. For valid syntax, see the man page for units(1). The GNU units command has much nicer functionality but it doesn't come w/ Mac OS X so I didn't add support for it in this version of the plug-in.

Google's calculator and conversion functionality is much nicer, but AFAICT they wouldn't be too happy w/ the results being scraped so as usual I have avoided making a plug-in which would leverage them ;-)

Oops. In #8, I actually meant "I followed the instructions in #7..."

I followed the instructions in #5 but I still don't get a "Search with Google" action after I type ".100 km in miles".

I wonder if it's because under Catalog->Modules I only see "Web Searches (from docs.blacktree.com)" to enable. And the 'i' drawer shows a long list of "Scanned Objects" under contents, all enabled.

Thanks for your help.

#5: This is something that's always irked me about installing that plugin; QS doesn't enable it once it's installed, you need to go in manually and switch it on.

I'm running one of the alpha dev editions, so my preference pane setup might be slightly different than yours. But here's the basic way to turn on the search module:

1) go into the Quicksilver preferences and then the Catalog preference pane
2) In your edition I *think* you should have a 'Custom' or 'Modules' section of all your catalog entries; basically, you need to find the 'Web Searches' module and enable it.
3) For extra points, click the 'i' at the bottom of QS, and you'll get a drawer that lets you customize various things in your catalog and plugins, including exactly which searches from this module get listed in your QS queries.

Hope this helps!

#1: The provided help is accessed by clicking the 'i' button in the Quicksilver plugin preference pane when you have this plugin selected. This is a typical operation for any plugin/action that has instructions associated with it, as it pops out a drawer with information. Also, I lay out an example of how to use this plugin in the post, along with examples of unit type conversions in the associated list.

Hope this helps.

How do I enable the "Search with Google" action in QS? I enabled the "Web Search Module" plug-in, but that didn't seem to do it.

Whoops, I meant without the QS plugin, but you *could* do them without QS as well :)
