Google Notifier for Mac released (formerly Gmail Notifier)
The Gmail Notifier is no more - long live Google Notifier! The search giant has updated their official notifier application for Gmail to include alerts for Google Calendar events - hence the name change. I don't know if this has any effect on whether the Gmail + Growl utility still works, but this is a nice evolution to a handy little app. Thanks Maxim Blinder!

Wow. I know Google haven't been too forthcoming with Mac stuff in the past, but this is pretty cool. Coupled with SketchUp, Google Earth, Google Notifier is a nice addition - particularly gCal stuff!

It keeps asking me to log in even though it's logged in. Weird.

I installed it yesterday and it doesn't seem to work so well on my iMac. It keeps asking for username and password every 2 minute or so. And it doesn't work with Growl. It has some built-in notification you can turn off. Hopefully Growl notification will be available soon. When these things are sorted out it will be a nice app on your desktop. For now I'm sticking with Gmail Notifier and Gmail+Growl.

Goodbye .Mac, with Google supplying this, and the Google Bookmark Syncing service for Firefox...I have cross platform access to my calendars, mail, and bookmarks...all working nicely together. If they could somehow sync my address book then it's Google all the way.

It kept asking me for login information as well, but I believe it was because I wasn't signed up for Google Calendar. I disabled the Google Calendar notification and it stopped asking me. Works fine for Gmail though.
The new popup display is a nice touch as well. I've never used the Growl plugin, but I believe it works essentially the same, bringing up a little popup in the corner to alert you. The popup even displays some of the content of the email.

Weird that they wrote their own popup code instead of using the Growl framework like everybody else.

Works great for me! Now it's time to decide between Mail.app or google notifier....

Huh. I didn't notice that at first henrrrik because Google Notifier uses a similar display style to the style I use for Growl (Smoke). But you're right, they did use their own notification system. Interesting.

Does anyone have a solution for something similar for Gmail domain hosted email accounts (https://www.google.com/hosted)? Can't even find a good Mac POP notifier (which would be a acceptable alternative).

The old GMail notifier works with the Google Hosted in the same way that the new Google Notifier does (which is half way). Just enter yourname@domain.com as the username and your password. It'll tell you when you get new mail and all that fun stuff, but, the links to your inbox and that kind of thing don't work correctly.

this is great. no problems here - though it probably has to do with the gcal issue mentioned above. i do have a gcal account.
i actually don't think it's that odd they built in their own notification instead of growl. they're incorporating an obvious feature, while cutting out the middle man. but they are allowing plugins, so hopefully a growl one will work soon - it's nice to have the consistency and control of growl.
anyway, let me get to my main observation. google notifier is only for mac - windows still only has gmail notifier. a minor point i know. but i think this is the first time google has released something for mac before windows (other than the web albums upload, i suppose, but that was only to make-up-for/placate us while we await our version of picasa... ). google is definitely becoming more mac-friendly.

It keeps prompting to log in because you probably don't have a Google calendar account yet. Log into http://calendar.google.com once, then it should work.

I've just noticed that Google Notifier only works on Tiger, whereas you have to stick with Gmail Notifier if you're on Panther? (I'm still stuck on 10.3.9, I've got Gmail+Growl)
