Apple to release a 23-inch Core 2 Duo iMac September 12th?
While trying to figure out why my TUAW Tips mailbox just choked and cried uncle, I finally found the source of the clog: too many tips to count started pouring in that the announced September 12th special event (not to be confused with the 25th) could be the announcement of a 23-inch iMac Core 2 Duo, not to be confused with the Core Duos in many Macs right now. This new chip is code named Merom (aren't Intel and their code name games cute?) and promises a 40% performance increase over current Core Duo chips, but with zero increase in power consumption. This rumor has blown up everywhere, from AppleInsider to MacRumors and, of course, Engadget. September 12th could easily be something big, as it isn't simply some arbitrarily chosen day - it coincides with the first day of Apple Expo Paris.
Speculators - start your engines.

I certainly hope this happens. A 23" iMac would be the perfect mid-range thing for me between the 17-20" iMac and the Mac Pro. :)

I love the idea.
Apple keeps moving the bar upwards.
Realistic price of $1999. Awesome.
Yes, I know you can buy a DELL for only $399 (after MIR). Not the point.
We are wealthy planet. Lots of people can afford $2K for a PC. And, once you see a 23-inch screen, you want it.
For me personally, I want the iMac 30-inch.

Living in his (well, the bank owns 17.6%of it) basement snd suffering with ONLY a 23-inch Apple monitor.

I really hope they announce this, I've been saving up all summer and I now have enough to buy a fully maxed out 20" and am just waiting for apple to upgrade the models before I buy. This would be soooo sweet if they release this, I just hope they keep the current pricing points by either dropping the 17" entirely or lowering the price of it and having the 20" take it's place in pricing.

Wouldn't they use the Conroe desktop processors rather than Merom which is intended for notebooks? Or perhaps that could provide further differentiation between a 23" model and the 17" and 20" models?

Merom=Low Voltage Conroe. They're virtually identical at the same clockspeeds. Cooling a Conroe would require more noise from the fans in the iMac.

Merom "promises" a 20% performance increase, not 40% as stated in this post. And real world tests so far show less than a 10% increase. Really, Core 2 Duo is little to be excited about apart from the fact that its 64bit, which future-proofs it somewhat

This is exactly what I've been waiting on to upgrade; a 23" Apple Cinema Display with an iMac built in. :)
Give me a Universal version of Adobe InDesign and I'm selling my G5 iMac 20" and buying this. (Yeah, I know; Adobe & Universal = Q2 2007).

why do people expect iPod docks built in the iMac.... it would take a dramatic change in design to put in a built in dock, and it would look silly, its not going to ever happen, one may end up in a future keyboard revision but i doubt that

Will it be branded as the 30th anniversary Mac? If it is I think we could expect a new feature or two (iPod dock and tuner?)
