24 inch iMac first impressions

No, we didn't whip out the old TUAW corporate card and get ourselves a new 24 inch iMac, though it was very tempting. Paul Stamatiou, up and coming tech blogger, had to get a machine to use whilst his ailing MacBook was off being repaired. He did what any red blooded Mac user would, got the biggest iMac ever.

Paul was kind enough to write up some of his first impressions. They boil down to: it is big, fast, and the speakers aren't very good though they are louder than previous iMacs.

Check out the post for some great pics of this gargantuan iMac.

I just got my 24" imac a couple of days ago. It's my new work computer so I've already logged plenty of hours on it. I've never owned a mac previously, so I don't have a base comparison to previous models. So far I am extremely impressed with everything about it. I love it to death and I really can't imagine working on my old PC anymore, like I did for so many years. I installed bootcamp and that worked like a dream as well. I can't say enough great things about it. The speakers are indeed a little weak, but that's not an issue as I already bought speakers for it. I did notice that it seems to give off a lot of heat, in particular when you eject a disc...those things are smokin to the touch. Is that normal? Besides that, it's fantastic.

This is a very well written first impression article. Very detailed and helpful for anyone looking and considering the 24" iMac.

I'm not sure I like the idea of having a monitor that big integrated with my computer. I have a 24-inch Dell that needs to be hooked up to a Mac Mini, Macbook, and PC desktop. Once you get to that size, the monitor needs to do double...even triple duty.

in the zdnet comp he links to, they compare a dell with 2gb ram, 2.4ghz CD2, raid 1, and a 256mb video card to a stock 24" and 17" imac and tell you how much slower they are

...even though they barely took any longer when they didnt beat the dell...

and the 24" costs $500 less than the dell...and...isnt a dell

I think it's more like how original can you get with such a design? I agree with the spec upgrade to 24" and that's absolutely nuts and cool, but really ... not more to expane to Lucy when you get home except that it's 24" and cost me about 500$ more.

All and all, I'm still very tempted to dump my MacBook for 24" iMac considering I don't really lug my 13" portable around as much as I used to.

Killer, regardless ... but it's like the new Ferrari that got the gold plated handles... it's just another "wow" to an already "wow" thing.
