Adobe wasn't about to let Apple hog the photo pro workflow limelight today. Today Adobe released the newly branded 'Adobe Photoshop Lightroom' Beta 4, their answer to Aperture (and the entire photography workflow market).New in this beta, besides the name, are a number of features:
- Mac and PC versions are now equal
- Slightly redesigned UI
- ability to rename files after import
Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

Andy - Are you using Firefox or another 'cool' browser? If you aren't, then you should. And if you are, then download an extension or two that removes all the ads and flash that bugs you.
(get it? mosquito... bugs you?)

I've gotta say, this version is inferior to Beta 3. It runs slower on my 2.16ghz MBP, the interface is more cluttered (what gives with the floral scroll detailing in the side panes?), and the "fit to screen" for sizing photos makes the photo slightly blurry. Worst of all, the photo becomes extremely blurry when playing with sliders in Develop, making it hard to tell what is actually happening to the photo. I even noticed that it randomly triggered the "eject" feature on my MBP's disc drive.
Looks to me like Adobe rushed this out to beat Aperture 1.5 and really missed the mark.

enough of the bickering about firefox you lot and give me some advice... i am a keen amateur photographer, have a MBP 17" and want something a little better than iPhoto. Is aperture worth the money or should i try out Adobe for free for a bit and see if i like it?
i also use CS1 so is it good to stay with adobe?
would buy Aperture but live in China and no download is available... also why is Lightroom such a small program compared to what i can only assume is a huge aperture as they don't offer a download?
anyone with superior knowledge can help would be most appreciated. also is it safe to install a beta on my beloved MBP? Would hate anything to happen to it.

I've been using Lightroom since Beta 2, and from what I've seen it is steadily improving. Beta 4 is faster than Beta 3 on my PowerBook, and the new interface is an improvement as far as I'm concerned. It's very dark, but that is a plus, as it essentially fades into the background, making it easier to see your photos. I get the blurriness you are talking about when first resizing or applying some kind of change, but after the change is processed, everything is sharp. I haven't used Aperture, though I am curious to see it, but Lightroom does a great job as far as I'm concerned.

I've been using Lightroom since its first Beta. I agree with Tony it's a very good program. File management is the gapiing hole in Lightroom as far as I'm concerned. Playing with Apeture in the Apple store has left me believing Apple will have a tough go of it when Lightroom is released. Which is a good thing because with two players duking it out Photographers are the winners. Give Lightroom a go it's free for the moment (it will expire) judge for yourself. Take Care --Mike
