The kids at Potion Factory are at it again. Their latest gorgeous app is Tangerine. Tangerine scans your iTunes library (very quickly) and analyzes the beat intensity of your tracks so that you can create playlists based on the intensity of the music (i.e. fast paced songs for working out, and slower songs for when you are pitching woo).At the moment the app is in beta, so it is free for download. If you blog about it you'll get a free license when the app is released.

#1: Not very accurate yet unfortunately as it is picking doubling up some BPM readings, meaning that I have a Katie Melua track analysed as being 177 BPM. Trust me, Katie Melua has never played anything at 177 BPM in her life (probably). Many examples of this cropped up in my library, it seems to be where there is a prominent off-beat in the mix...
Great GUI and will be an all-round lovely app when its done, but the analysis software still needs a lot of refining yet...

I love the idea but for some reason, of the 8000 tracks on my iTunes only 10 have any data in the BPM field so this app is no use to me.

Dude, it analyzes your songs...
I don't think it looks at BPM metadata tag.

Well, it analyzed my songs, crashed. Then, when opened analyzed again and came up with BPM of -1 for each song.

OK - it seems that when it crashed that messed up the analyzing and so, after choosing File > Rechoose iTunes Library it now works. As DukeTogo rightly points out, it doesn't use the BPM and now appears to be working for me fine.

Yeah. It really does not do a very accurate job of analyzing BPM. It gave Tom Waits and Kate Bush some of the highest ratings. The ratings in fact look almost random. Really makes it all kind of worthless. I would LOVE to find a program that actually does do a good job of analyzing BPM. Anyone?

Eric - one of the most advanced apps that do beatsensing is Traktor DJ Studio from http://www.native-instruments.com. It does evene integrate with iTunes quite nicely, you will, however, come with a nuke to a gunfight with this one, as it is a fully fledged i/Power/mac/book/pro DJ'ing solution.
That said, I still appreciate this application for analyzing my 7k+ dance songs from my iTunes library overnight and tagging it appropriately, fully auto, nice job. Some false "speedgarage readings" occur from time to time, yet they're quite easy to spot and correct with a good, ol' hand-tapping to the rhythm.

When I download it, it puts a .exe file with some random combo of letters and numbers. I don't know if this is a virus (for PC on a Mac program?). Has any one else found that?

When it does get more accurate it's great for generating random running playlists based on BPM. Figure out a good pace, find the BPM that is close and then set up a smart playlist... I'm lovin what ive seen so far.

This will be great when it works. At the moment the BPM's generated are little better than random numbers. Fantastic shop window, but nothing in it.
