Adobe CS3 icons revealed

The recent beta of Adobe Photoshop CS 3 included a brand new icon, based on color and typography. It would seem that this is the direction that Adobe is doing to for all their icons, at least according to this post by John Nack. He points to the image above (larger version here) which shows the new icons for Adobe's products.

Looks like it'll be different colored boxes with letters in them, say goodbye to those spherical icons of yore.

What do you think of the new icons?

I appreciate the idea of less is more, but I don't like the typography itself. I hate the large cap... I'm sure it looks cool with 10 of those in the dock, but by itself I feel it's simply not good enough. Dissapointeeed!

How are they "phoned in"? They developed a system and approached it in a different way than before. Now when I look at my dock I can EASILY tell which icon is open.

This is information design, folks. If you like a different icon, change it yourself and move onto the real work – using the programs.

Some people here say they don't understand why Adobe would do this for creative software, but I never understood why they used the old icons for creative software; c'mon venus?! eye!? feather?! they were amongst the most ugly and tacky icons I've seen. evar.

This has got to be a joke initiated by Adobe purely to bring about more CS3 hype, because no seriously talented designer would present these to their boss and expect to not be fired on the spot. They'll look like complete crap on the Dock. The color differences are way too subtle, which means your brain has to take the time to read the letters and figure out which app they represent. It's 100% stupid, pure and simple. Did Microsoft buy Adobe or something, because this is the kind of thing I'd expect from Bill. Yes, this has got to be a joke.

Imagine if Apple took the same approach with their OS X icons...

I'm not a fan at all.

It's a shame, I really like the CS1 and CS2 icons.

They look very..."Web 2.0" to me. I thought the CS2 icons looked better, although they had nothing to do with, well, anything (unless you readily associate starfish with web design), but I found it easy to quickly differentiate the apps based on their icons. And as others have said, one would think that the foremost design package would have someone somewhere in some basement (or something) putting a little effort into these icons. Even Office for OS X got some not-terrible looking icons.

Kyle Nilson: Those feathers look awesome, very Mac-ish, I hope he does a full set.

Worst.
Icons.
Ever.
Adobe is lame and I'm rapidly growing to loath them and their apps. They've clearly been overrun by artless Win.idiots. What crap.

Here's a good illustration of exactly why this sort of initial "icon" is not only totally lacking in creativity or effort, but a really poor idea:
