Dan Warne hates 10 things about the iPhone

Nothing in this world is perfect, other than hindsight, and the iPhone is no exception. People will encounter quirks when using this product in the real world. Hey, it happens (especially with a first rev of a complex product).
Dan Warne has given a little thought to the iPhone and has created a list of ten things he hates about it. Considering that the iPhone has been out for less than a day this is an impressive feat. Dan lists, amongst his complaints:
- The battery isn't removable
- EDGE (it is slow compared to the other options)
- 5 hour talk time
Is there anything about the iPhone that you hate? Sound off in the comments.

Your comments: I don't mind that it's EDGE in stead of 3G. I have a 3G phone right now but wouldn't think twice about trading it in for this. I don't live in the US so the Cingular bit doesn't concern me. This past summer (which is the only time of year that I use my phone as a "modem") I got 238kbps on EDGE, and that is more than enough to do normal stuff like email and surfing the net. And video conferencing? My phone supports it now, I have never used it, and I don't know anyone else who have ever used it either. As for a replaceable battery.. I have never needed to replace a battery, but then again, I have rarely had a phone for more than 2 years tops. The whole point of this phone is that it can be upgraded because the UI is upgraded as well, hence no need to switch to a new phone to get new features. That would mean that it should last longer than a regular mobile phone and the battery thing might become an issue. But it doesn't bother me enough to not want one...

This pisses me off as a long time Apple user!!
My only real complaint is that it appears there won't be an opportunity to run 3rd party apps or other non-bundled OSX apps on this supposedly "OSX" device. The best thing about my Treo is that I can get all kinds of wacky freeware for it to suit my tastes/needs/interests.

My 2 yr. old son touches the screen on my MBP and it leaves big icky marks. I would hate that on my phone/movieplayer/internetsurfing/musicplayer/$600beast. Newer cameras with touchscreen LCDs and no other viewfinder are bad about that, too.

There are a lot of Mac devotees out here (me included) who would happily dump our cell phones for an iPhone...if it didnât mean defaulting on our current cell contracts or having to switch to a provider that consistently gets low marks with most consumer groups (ex: Consumer Reports recently ranked Cingular in the bottom two providers for all 18 of the largest markets nationwide).
Would I love to own an iPhone? You bet. But will I leave Verizon to do it? No way.
I donât recall Apple ever allowing their success to rely (in part) on another company with such a poor proven track record. Odd call, so to speak.
I'm lucky if I get three hours of talk time out of my phone's battery.

I am going to be forced to keep my Treo, I probably will upgrade to the 750 (it has 3G finally). I can't install any progams on my PC at work, and I need to transfer photos and other such files. I stick my SD card in the reader and boom, I am done.
Before some thinks, just email it, it isn't that easy. Cingulars edge tops out at 135Kbps or 16.9 Bytes per second, a 4MB files will take 4 minutes, if everything is running at top speed. If I have 10 photos to email it will take 40 minutes. That is unacceptable. The edge I can live with now because I don't send files in email very often, and don't surf the web very often from my Treo. I do want 3G becasue when I do it will be faster. I can live with the iPhone and the edge since I use it now, but I need to transfer files easily since I can't sync it at work.
I saw no mention of the processor or application platform for the iPhone. If it runs OSX, can it be a small Intel processor? What if we want to install open source applications? Does Safari support Flash swf? What's going to protect a beautiful screen from scratches if you have to be able to touch and pinch the screen? Gotta have ssh, but even more important would be a mini Remote Desktop Admin (for remote Help Desk) and Xserve Admin Utilities. They could bundle the two in a software license and I'd buy it. Clearly, the larger market is the average consumer. But the IT Mgrs are fast moving, mobile, and will harness all the capabilities. Would be nice to have it run the Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection software for OSX. I prefer Sprint's network, so Cingular is an unknown for me.
January 10 2007 at 11:56 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySomone made the comment that every iPod loving kid will have to have one. True they will, but will parents be willing to shell out $500 + and extra $40 a month for Cingulars PDA package? It is easy to give your kid a $149 Nano or shuffle, or even a 30GB iPod, but a $500 phone? This also doesn't take into account that not everyone is out of contract between now and June and is willing to switch to Cingular. Only 25% of people will be out of contract between now and June. And Cingular doesn't offer insurance on their PDA phones.
