iPhone: Intel not inside
I was just wondering out loud to Hadley Stern of AppleMatters tabout the chip that powers the iPhone. Looks like I can cross Intel off my list of suspects. Intel and Apple both confirm that there is no Intel silicon in the iPhone. Apple didn't say who is the chip maker for the iPhone.Interestingly, Intel is powering the Apple TV. I wonder which Intel chip, the smart money says it is powered by Viiv.
Thanks, Scotto.

Viiv isn't a chip, it's like Centrino, it's a label manufacturers get to use when they use an Intel CPU, chipset & some software in a PC.

I am curious to see if the iPhone or Apple TV can play games. Can I use the Wii remote with the Apple TV? Also it was noted that the visual voice mail and upcoming features of the iPhone had to be developed with Cingular and that there is a multi year contract with them. I would not expect to get this phone to work with anyone but Cingular for many years.

Actually there is Intel silicon in the iPhone. It uses Intel flash memory. It doesn't use an Intel processor though. I work at Intel and this was big news on our Intranet website this morning.

My bets are the Apple TV is using left over core solo chips. It would explain why it an only do 720p and would allow it to be cheaply produced.

I believe Apple are using a special-purpose chip that has the mobile radio built-in with an ARM core.
Being that Intel now own ARM technically yes it wouldn't be using Intel *silicon* but is using silicon from somebody else that integrates their licenced design.
This would be identical to the original few gen's of iPods where they were using a chip from PortalPlayer that had dedicated MP3/audio decoding support wrapped around again an ARM core.
