SuperSync: iTunes Library Syncing
SuperSync is a cross-platform application that allows you to sync two separate iTunes libraries. I actually have this problem as I am planning to set up some kind of central home music server, but my family has a couple of separate libraries. Unfortunately, there are a lot of duplicate songs between the libraries, so just mashing them together is not really feasible. SuperSync allows you to compare the two libraries and only copy over what missing. In addition to the syncing function, SuperSync allows you to access your music library from across the internet, e.g. accessing a home computer while on the road or at work.SuperSync is available for Mac and Win (and, to be frank, it shows). Licenses come in multi-packs, temporarily on sale for $29.00 for two.
[Edit: I've heard some reports about problems with this software. As always if you try any software of this sort, be sure to backup!]

I tried it out and it promptly wiped out my iTunes library. I've added everything back but my playlists are now gone for good. Needless to say, I don't think I'll be buying this...

an easier way to share a library and playlist is to get a NAS device like the Western Digital Netcenter, copy the itunes folder from 1 computer to the NAS, create aliases of the Itunes Music Library XML file and Itunes Library files on the NAS, copy the aliases onto any machine on your network, delete the word 'alias' and then drag it into that computer's Music folder replacing the existing files. You can also have the NAS mount automatically by dragging it into your Login items preference pane.

I use iPod to keep iTunes in sync between my computers. I just drag everything into the "Purchased" playlist, sync the iPod on that machine. Then move to the new machine and sync the iPod from there.
This works pretty well for now. I thought I learned how to do this from an article here, but I can't seem to find it now.

what's the best way to sync 2 itunes libraries (XML files?) in order to retain ratings and playlists etc. i know that i can get the songs in the right places with my syncing software, but what about the meta data.
does this new app do that?

You can't Sync 2 xml files - iTunes only outputs the xml files it does not import that data - it has its own database.
Hey seriously this SuperSync has big issues. I'd suggest DOT.TUNES http://www.dottunes.net

yeah, DotTunes is pretty much the way to go for remote access to your iTunes files. much easier (and cheaper) than using a NAS drive.
i'd use something like Podworks or Senuti + an iPod to merge libraries. the process may take an extra step or two, but works just fine and has never jeopardized my data.

I have been using Supersync for a few months now, and really like it! It's allowed me to sync my music from home with my work computer. It's easy and well worth the $29.
