iPhone provides grassroots inspiration

MSN Money has a fascinating report on the reaction to Apple's unveiling of the iPhone at January's Macworld. If any event could be said to trigger a groundswell of grassroots reporting, it was the iPhone. In fact, the iPhone certainly set new records in that regard with a huge response of rich media--podcasts, photos, videos, hands-on reports and more.

According to the MSN article, the iPhone was mentioned by more blogs for the next 10 days than either McDonald's or George W. Bush. Wikipedia had an iPhone entry within minutes of Jobs' keynote speech. Nifty article, well worth a read.

The only part of this story that surprises me is that McDonald's is/was a hot topic for blogs. Politics I can understand (more or less) but why would anyone waste their time talking about a fast food restaurant chain and why would anyone else care?

Yeah, I can remember the Wii keynote- built up with years of speculation beforehand, and all the passion and lust generated by tasty little morsels like Nintendo having registered the Wii.com domain years beforehand. But then there were people who noted that Nintendo had also registered ovowiiviperous.com as well and said it wasn't any big deal. Then, just a few months before its release, the guy who started Reddit dropped science on the Wii and we all knew the rumors and speculation would turn into physical reality. You're totally right, Mark2000, you, me, and all the media and poseurs have been on the Wii's jock much more than any apple phone.

I think the Wii has had as much press/speculation/fakes. And frankly I was more interested in it than any apple phone.
