Big News: Adium Hits the Big 1.0
After 4 years of hard work by almost 30 volunteers, instant messaging application Adium has finally reached version 1.0. The most significant update to the program in over a year and a half, the update brings with it a slew of new features, bug fixes, and added functionality. I've been using the 1.0 since it hit beta on July 4th of last year, and it is truly a treat to interact with. As for the new features, here's the shortlist:- Working Direct Connect and file transfer.
- Global user profile and buddy icon.
- Xtras manager.
- Completely overhauled interface and icons.
- Redesigned log viewer.
- Major privacy enhancements.
- Full changelog here.

I only just downloaded RC1 the other day and they're already up to 1.0? Incredible progress!

I personally love Adium, but can anybody tell me why no open source IM program has video conferencing? This is one feature that is sorely missed for one such as myself and prevents me from using is full-time. Just a thought.

I would imagine that video conferencing would be pretty hard to implement in a way that would be cross-platform. Each OS has a different video API; Mac has Core Video, Linux uses (I believe) Video4Linux, and Windows has who-knows-what. Also, are the video protocols that AIM, MSN, Yahoo, etc. public domain? (or have they been reverse engineered?)
I agree that video conferencing would be great to add. Right now I still have to keep iChat open, which I use for my AIM contacts (because I video chat with some of them). I use Adium for all the other networks I'm on (MSN, Yahoo, etc.) but having to use a separate program for AIM defeats the whole all-in-one convenience idea that makes Adium so cool.

I just tried a filetransfer with a friend who uses iChat and it didn't work. Just sat there trying to accept.

I just had Adium check for updates, and it told me nothing was new. But it's still .89.1... Hmmm. Silly duck.
Just an FYI, for all you out there who use it.

I think the Adium folks deserve a big thanks from all us users out here. This project has been around for a long time and the results are really nice. This is some good looking free open source software that is another nice plus for the Mac platform. Keep up the good work folks!

A big thanks to all the contributors who keep making Adium better all the time. I have delted MSN off my system a long time ago and will never look back. Cheers on 1.0 and keep up the great work.

Adium rocks! Big kudos to all those who worked on it!
The only issue I have with the new version is the tiny scroll bars on the contact list, can you make them bigger? I can't see it in prefs?

Adium will get voice and video when libgaim supports it. Currently both are planned for Gaim's 3.0 release, which is a while off yet since they're still getting to 2.0.
And @ molecule
You do know you can change Adium's interface to just about anything don't you?

I'm a Mac geek supporting hundreds of PC users. While all of you get your knickers in a tizzle comparing it to all you love about iChat, I'm comparing it to GAIM on the Windows platform, and am VERY thankful for all the hard work that has gone into this application -- it's one more thing that absolutely shuts up my WinBigot friends when they see what the love and dedication to the Mac platform has wrought. They have my thanks and adoration!

As soon as you get iChat to work with MSN, you call me - OK?
And for that matter, Y!, G Talk, Jabber, and of course AIM.
I can use Adium for 4 different networks, simultaneously.
And I have been using 1.0 in beta for many months now, and it has been awesome. Congrats on the 1.0!!!

I love adium, finally file transfers are working. I wish it could support skype (that's the only service left I need it to have). And voice/video of course.

I'm an Adium user, but iChat works fine with google talk, jabber (google talk is just jabber anyway), and aim.
I like the tabs, I like the better group chat support, and I like the far more extensive configuration options. Most of the mac users at my company, though, use iChat to connect to our jabber server.

Hey VR, why do we have to call you?!
iChat has been doing MSN, Jabber, G Talk since jabber came along in version 3. All at the same time.
Why are you asking for AIM support?
That is what iChat is using.

Maybe I've been out of the loop since August, but iChat supports Google Talk now? Hmm..
Well, I'm all settled into Adium, so I think I'll stay.
