After almost 8 years in production, the open-source instant messaging application
Fire has come to an end. Pre-dating even iChat, Fire was the first multi-protocol client on the platform, and has long had a dedicated user base. The loss of multiple key members of the development team and a reliance on legacy frameworks which were no longer being updated caused key members of the development team to reconsider their future plans and cease active development. Fortunately for fans of the software, two of Fire's developers have joined the
Adium team, and the two applications are already integrating features. Users switching from Fire to Adium can choose to have all of their contacts, logs, away messages, and groups transferred to the new software.

Well, at least Adium is going to get even better than it already is. ;)

Adium is okay- it can't do video chat which makes it eons behind iChat.

Adium would be even better if it would support IRC like Fire did.
I know it's against the philosophy of Adium to include IRC support since it's not a "IM" protocol but a "Chat Room" protocol, but at the end of the day, it all comes down to: "I want to chat on MSN, and I want to chat on IRC. And I want the chat program to do it all."

My first OS X application in 2000. I was a regular member until 2005, when it's development and stability were called into question.
I'm glad to hear that the adium team is getting seasoned developers.

Here's hoping those dev's have video support at the top of their priority list! I love Adium, but the lack of video support is a major downpoint.
I'd consider iChat, but it's just too clunky to setup for all the IM transports that I use.

My wishlist for Adium:
a) H.323 and SIP support for audio/video
b) Libjingle for Google Talk voice chat.
XMeeting provides a), but it would be nice to have an all-in-one solution. Gizmo supports SIP and Jabber, but no video and there's no app with libjingle for the mac yet as far as I know (maybe som CVS build of Psi).
Using closed proprietary communication protocols is just ridiculous.

Too bad. Adium is great for kids with all its quacky features, but Fire just handled business.

I started out with Fire when I first went mac but I can't remember what caused me to switch. Something I wanted/needed wasn't working right at the time and Adium fixed it. I'd forgotten all about the app.
Loved their Icon.

Wait! When you say "Users switching from Fire to Adium can choose to have all of their contacts, logs, away messages, and groups transferred to the new software." do you mean... what do you mean? There is no such feature in Adium right now.
I have a few years worth of chat logs in Fre format, waiting for a way to be imported into Adium's DB, and this migration feature would be great.

Gabriel,
The import is part of Adium's first run setup. Currently there is no way to initiate the import using the UI, but Evan mentioned in the forums a method to trick the importer into running:

Hi, Protheus is really great, but only one who could repair my crippled server contact list (because sh*t Miranda) was ICQ for MAC :) I had no success with adium, fire, protheus, icq for windows. Some added contacts was lose after each restart/quit.
I'm using Protheus now.
