Found Footage: iPhoneology
Back during the Cold War there were experts on the Soviet Union called "kremlinologists" who would study, in exhausting detail, any information that leaked out from behind the Iron Curtain for clues about what the Russians might be up to. Well, now I think the guys over at Actioncorp.net have earned the title of "iPhoneologist" for the thoroughly detailed examination of the Keynote for clues about Apple's forthcoming gadget. Interesting tidbits include more information (and reasonable speculation) on the calendar app, Google maps, ringtones and more. This YouTube video is well produced and definitely worth a a viewing.

He mentioned the camera, but he didn't say he was going to demo it.

Great video, I feel so much smarter. I think all of those points were good ones and well done. The ringtones tab is an obvious answer and Steve's answer seems very smokescreen-ish. Getting more and more excited about the iPhone now. I only hope that Steve will surprise us all with better features included GPS, I mean that thing would sell twice as much if you could slap it in your car as a GPS unit and have all your iTunes library at the same time. I mean that would be the perfect combo of the three main items found inside cars thesedays, phone, ipods and gps.

Yes, that was really interesting! Especially the pod of "ringtones as media" on iTunes music store. Thanks for the post! I hope Apple will implement a feature that when writing email or SMS, you can turn the iPhone to the side and get a much wider keyoard for easier typing. Cheers y'all

Very informative. He should offer up those ringtones for free given the price of the device.

#4, Greenline, great comment. I was looking for a solution for you and I found it: My Helio Drift by Samsung has bluetooth for phone and media player, and it has built-in GPS with Google maps! Quite a bit cheaper than the iPhone too... yes, #5, I can also make my songs (or videos) my ringtone also.

What I want to know is who's phone number is listed on the portion covering the iPhone's interaction with iTunes? I'm a little hesitant to call it, but wouldn't it be something if Steve's cell number was made available for everyone in the audience? I'd bet it's a dummy number, though.

Edit #8: Oops. Nevermind. It's just the number listed on his .mac resume.

Of the two buttons that couldn't really be seen, it appears that the calendar button says "Today," like a quick home button back to the do-tos of the current day after setting a new appointment.
The maps button on the left is probably a fork and knife or something that relates to finding directions for local businesses.

The button on the bottom left of the Google Maps shot actually reminded me of the playable directions feature in Google Earth, so that maybe you can preview your route before embarking. It makes more sense for it to be dining listings or directions info, but that's the first thing that came to mind.

Selling ringtones as seperate items! That's retarded! I sure hope that apple isn't going that way. I have never bought a ringtone for my phone and I NEVER WILL. I have always been able to make my own ringtones with the songs I already have and they are always better than 5 seconds that repeat over and over again that you get when you buy a ringtone. If I already own the CD why should I need to buy the song a second time?!? I'm so sick of greedy media and phone companies trying to squeeze as much money as they can out of us for the same content. If apple does this we need to rebel and NOT BUY ANY RINGTONES! There is NO technical reason that an AAC file or an MP3 for that matter could be used as a ringtone. It would save space for one and it would just make so much sense that it boggles the mind that anyone would think of another way to implement ringtones.

I had thought about a sort of "Pause" button, but I'd never used Google Earth so I didn't really think of anything to tie it to. I'm just still surprised they couldn't make out or guesstimate "Today."
