Suggestion of iPhone savings
Reader Derek went to his local Cingular dealer to pick up a Blackberry Pearl last week. Upon examining his receipt, he found that it said, "iPhone 2 year agreement savings: $150.00" (you can see an image of the entire receipt at Derek's site). On one hand, it looks like the folks at Cingular need to re-program their registers. Secondly, we can speculate that this indicates a discounted 2 year plan on iPhones. That could take some of the sting out of $499US.
Thanks, Derek!

Sadly, I think this will mean the unsubsidized price of the iPhone will be $649 and $749. Steve's keynote clearly displayed "$499 with 2 year contract" on one of the slides. You aren't going to be able to get an iPhone cheaper, at least not during the launch.

That doesn't say iPhone - it says 1 (numeral one) phone. I did the same double-take when I signed up for a Cingular phone lately.

I completely agree with Steve, it is not iPhone. It is 1Phone.

it quite clearly is an 'i', and this hardly means anything. once someone actually BUYS an iPhone, then we can see what it will cost, okay?

Clearly the letter "i" on Derek's site. Compare to the printed numeral "1" elsewhere in same.

Did you people forget your glasses today? That's the clearest letter "i" I've ever seen. Put down the crack pipe.

Let's compromise...it's a 1 with a dot above it.

Sorry guys but the x-height (typographic terms, here) for the typeface clearly show it is not a lowercase i and is a printing error for the numeral "1."

I just called about the iPhone and the salesman flat out told me to buy the 8525 because its cheaper and has MS Word on it ?!?! I suppose he spends all his time writing novels and doing spreadsheets on his phone lol

Another suggestion: Just wait a year. In the realm of falling prices on electronics, cell phones cliff-dive at a rate second to none.

Sorry Dman, but x-height doesn't really come into play on a dot matrix receipt printer. It's clearly an "i" when you look at it here:

why did you guys change this image? the original image clearly said 1Phone. I came back here to look at it again after the "iPhone" image was being reprinted everywhere, but now your image is different as well as having a Photoshop tag in its Exif data.
What's going on TUAW?

That's the same image that's always been there. I know, because I'm the one who posted it.

It's a 1. I went to his site, even. Stop playing games.

Dave, sorry about that, I looked at it again on my crummy Dell monitors at work in FF, and it looks like a 1. It's definitely an i.

So that's why everyone is differing on opinion about what that says.. seems obvious to me it's an "i" but i guess it must have been a "1" before.
So yea, what's going on TUAW?

When iPhone launches a lot of people are going to be switching to Cingular. I have already switched mainly because Verizon did not provide service where we moved. I found a great deal at Wireless MarketPlus. It was easy to sing up and the phones where delivered right to my door. No more waiting in lines to talk to high pressure sales people.
