Sprint to offer $0.99 music downloads via phone

AppleInsider is reporting that Sprint is about to offer $0.99 music downloads that can be accessed directly from their upcoming "Upstage" phone. The $149US phone will require a 2 year contract and feature access to the company's over-the-air Sprint Music Store.

This is something that I dearly wish the iPhone - and even more so a future iPod - could do. Imagine sitting in Starbucks and downloading music directly to your iPhone/iPod. No video, of course, but it would be fun to grab a song just when you think of it. Now Sprint is going to beat them to it, and with a phone called "Upstage."

Sprint has had an online music store for a couple of years. Up until now, the tracks were $2.50 for one that you downloaded over-the-air onto your phone, and another copy you downloaded onto your computer.

I never cease to be confused (and slightly amused) about the US contract phone market. In the UK, all but the most expensive phones come for free on plans £30-£35 and above. No chuffing "online only discounts", no "mail in rebates" and no "one time setup charges".

Also, there's no 3 in the US, so I couldn't get the amazingly good value X-Series data plan for only £5 a month extra - that's around $2.50 for 1GB of data!

I can't wait for the iPhone - I hope 3 manage to get it and put it on X-Series!

I thought Apple just received a patent for this???

Would this not then infringe on Apple's patent?

One song at 3.5MB over GSM / EDGE would be be painful. (There's a reason people are saying the lack of 3G / HSDPA in the v1.0 iPhone is not so good, and suicide for anywhere outside the 3G challenged USA.)

Fortunately, the iPhone has Wi-Fi, as do most coffee shops, so you could do it that way. You just wouldn't be able to get your song while standing at the Washington Monument (assuming no Wi-Fi there - can any DC resident confirm?)

Don't think for a second the iPhone won't have this as a version 1.0 feature. It will.
