iPhone rebates or subsidies?

In the US most carriers offer rebates and/or subsidies to offset the cost of phones and their contracts. Will Apple follow this trend? Rumors are swirling that they might just do so. According to several sources including Apple Insider, American Technology analyst Shaw Wu says Apple is considering offering a mail-in rebate or carrier subsidy in the $50 to $150 range. When you compare this amount to the guaranteed revenues from many data cell phone plans (they can run into the multiple thousands of dollars over a two year contract), it's a drop in the bucket.

iPhone will be on the market in June. I would like to purchase an iPhone as soon as it is available. ;) Another, anybody knows whether or not the iPhone software http://www.iphoneconverter.net/ works for 5Gen 80GB iPod?

@Adam,

Don't forget AppleCare. I bet that adds another $100 or so... (Just a guess... $60 for ipods, $150 for mini.. ~$100 is in the middle...)

While I want to lick my monitor every time I see a picture of the iPhone, I also know how first gen Apple products can be.. and I'm also really reluctant to switch from T-Mobile to Cingular. I'm probably going to at least wait until Macworld '08 and pray that they come out with a nano-sized version... and really pray that they announce a T-Mobile offering, even if it's in the future. (Hey, they're also GSM... it's more likely than Verizon.)

Well, I'm sure that's what Wall Street analysts are HOPING will happen now that they've seen most of the tech community "really" doesn't care that much about the iPhone other than a curiosty based on the harsh reaction everyone had to the annoucment of the delay of Leopard to get the iPhone to market.

But puhleese. This is Apple computer. They don't have "sales" or "rebates". Unless it's something someone returned and refurbed.

No kids your 8Gb iPhone is going to be $599 + 36 activation fee + sales tax and two year contract that will probably start at $70 a month with the most useful one at $100 a month. Total out the door will be $730+ and a 2 year $2,000 agreement.

Don't believe me? Go and set yourself up with a Cingular 8525, 1,300 minute plan and PDA connect and see what you're in for at their website.
