Xtorrent 1.0 v40 released with per-torrent bandwidth throttling, list of big features to come

Using his crystal ball, however, Watanabe also announced three major features we can strike off the request list: selective file downloading, encryption, and torrentcast auto-downloading (though I should point out that Xtorrent can already subscribe to RSS feeds of torrents - it just doesn't auto-snag 'em yet). Dave announced that these features are "absolutely" planned for a future release (or spread out across more than one), though we'll all just have to sit tight as these things naturally fall under the tried and true "they'll be done when they're done" policy.

It isn't often that developers unveil their cards, but when they do, their user's ears typically perk up. Such is the case with Dave...

If I was one of the Transmission developers, I'd borrow back some of Dave's interface design and implement it into Transmission, in return for all his Xtorrent dodginess in relation to GPL, which requires code release (LGPL doesn't, GPL does). I had so much trouble finding the reference to libtransmission on the Xtorrent site - apparently the single character, "1", on the main page, is the link.
But that's me, and the Transmission developers are probably better people than I am...
#36: We're a blog, and we blog what we like. To clear up any confusion however: accepting free products of any kind, including licenses for $20 shareware or $2500 in Adobe software, is strictly against Weblogs, Inc. policies. We either have to give products to our readers or return it to the manufacturer.
We also just blogged the Transmission update:
http://www.tuaw.com/2007/04/19/transmission-0-7-bittorrent-client-released/
and I'd like to thank everyone for letting us know about the update. I don't use Transmission, so I didn't see it. I *do* use Xtorrent, so I caught Watanabe's update. That's about it to the story here folks.
"Just my two cents, xtorrents does's tell me what sites he is looking at, i now that one of them is mininova among others once you watch your tracffic you can tell but it's like everything appears by magic..."
This is configurable - XTorrent | Preferences; it's on the first tab. You can add whatever search engines you want.
I've added scrapetorrent with the following config string:
http://www.scrape3.dreamhosters.com/Results/index.php?search=%@&ft=basic&season=&episode=&rt=&sort=seed&rd=&fz=&pf=
Scrapetorrent is a nice site - I've donated to keep it up and running. Perfect for finding those old TV shows that you missed or want to see again (my main torrent use case...)
Enough whining already.
IMHO, XTorrent provides enough additional value over Transmission to justify its cost. If you don't want it, you're free to not buy it. I happen to like it - nice interface, well integrated with OS X, and with a minimum of clutter. I migrated from Azureus, which I've used since the earliest releases, and I haven't missed it much.
As for torrent banning, I have yet to run into this with either transmission or XTorrent.
Seriously, though, this "David W is a thief" topic is misinformed BS. Read up on the MIT license - he is not violating it in any way. Could he give the transmission folks more credit? Sure. I'd go so far as to say that he SHOULD use this as a selling point - "Built with Transmission Technology!" would be nice addition to the product page.
He's not "stealing" anything.
As for David W's customer service skills, I've had nothing but good experiences dealing with him. Every question I've asked (and suggestion that I've made) has been answered promptly and professionally. Based upon the tone of these postings, I have to wonder - did those who are complaining about his customer service skills get miffed when he responded in kind? Seriously, you can't expect a courteous response when you attack a person. I'm just guessing here, but I certainly haven't had any bad experiences with him.
Arrogant? Sure. Every good developer that I've ever met is arrogant and confident in one way or another. Goes with the territory.
This one makes me laugh: "Dave is an ass. He uses libtransmission"
Do you have any idea how many products out there use FOSS components? More than you think. Even FOSS products leverage other FOSS components; that's one of the beautiful things about the open source model. MIT licensing *expressly* permits commercial use of OSS components; in fact, it is one of the most commercialization-friendly OSS licenses available.
"This fool wants us to pay him for a BitTorrent client? What is he smoking?"
He's developed a product which leverages an existing torrent library. It's got some nice features which Transmission does not have, namely the integrated search stuff and iTunes integration. Not worth it to you? Then don't buy it. He's hardly shoving it down anybody's throat.
The Transmission folks have done a really nice job with their product. DW should give them more credit for the work they've done. His only fault here, IMHO, is not letting folks know that his product is built upon libtransmission. Tacky, yes; but theft? Nope.
Thanks for all the posts. Considering these posts, I won't even consider buying xTorrent.
Does DW make any other apps that I should also avoid?
It doesn't make any sense that TUAW is still posting good reviews about DW softwares when 90% of people that post comments diss him. Maybe DW is giving away free licenses to the TUAW team :P

but well tvshows does the same without telling that it uses tvrss.net probably this new version of torrents uses it too.
Such products are only possible thanks to the work of a community of ppl who to create such content and such librarys.
It's not asking much that they give some credict.
Other than that Xtorrent is a good client but the nag screen the randown disable make me not trust it.
I will not pay for a BT app!!
Try Transmission - New Version

I haven't had any bad experiences with DW's software (or with DW) and am a licenced user of both Acquisition and Xtorrent. I also use TVShows and Transmission to download shows which I miss. I think that Xtorrent has features which Transmission lacks, such as a built-in search feature. Saying that, I love both programs.
I don't understand why people complain that DW puts restrictions on the 'free' version of Xtorrent. I tried the demo, which limits your bandwidth and what you can download, and it gave me a sufficient "flavor" to decide it was worth buying. Xtorrent is a polished application - why shouldn't he be able to charge for it?
"Hey TUAW, why don't you cover Transmission's release rather this shareware torrent garbage, when this today was Transmission's FIRST major release in over a year!"
Just thought I'd repeat this. I can't understand why TUAW would choose one over the other.
