iPhone on Lost?

I'm not much of a "Lost" fan (I guess you could say I "lost" interest in season one. Ha!). However, many people are, including TUAW reader David who noticed that the UI of a "satellite phone" used on last night's episode looked kind of familiar (Reader loki the first has posted a much larger screenshot here). Those rounded square buttons, even the real Mac OS X "Home" icon...heck, that's an iPhone! OK, an iPhone crammed into a Newton, but the similarities are pretty striking. Heck, note the hand position in both photos (yes, we realize that there are only so many ways to hold a cell phone).
So now they've got an iPhone before anyone else. That island really IS strange...
Thanks, David!

Product Placement is not a new thing, guys!
Why all the buzz about it?
And the reason why they choose to make the interface look like iPhone and not use the entire iPhone is simple. It would look stupid.
So by using an interface they get hype (because of people like you guys) and people will think "Wow, thats cool, just like in lost" when they see the iPhone.
so it has square icons like the iPhone. Uh-huh.

April 20 2007 at 9:27 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySo that island must be somewhere in China... Where the iPhone is being produced :-)
Otherwise they could never have the prototype in advance...
Maybe they'll watch the Hanso foundation movies on the AppleTV sometimes soon.
I am waiting for the new Lost season to be aired here in Europe on TV and this image is hardly a spoiler. I have read many mixed (negative) reviews about the fact the series is turning towards a soap opera with no real suspence and nothing is being "discovered". That, together with the fact all tv series and movies are not available on iTunes store here is what disturbs me most, not the picture of a hand holding a phone...
Thanks for the spoiler! Also thanks to comment #12 for telling us how the whole satellite phone thing turns out, doesn't spoil the anticipation at all.

M
It is a NOKIA phone running Linux with a customized GUI.

April 19 2007 at 11:03 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYeah, they did use the basis of iPhone's UI on the satellite phone they found on the island. I don't they they were trying to use an old prototype of anything...I think they were just givin' props to apple.
Remember when TV Shows were announced for iTunes music store? Steve showed a small clip of Lost (the pilot episode) to demonstrate some of the content.
