Is iPhone anticipation slowing Cingular smartphone sales?
AppleInsider relayed an interesting tidbit from Apple's BFF on Wall Street, analyst Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray: Cingular stores (it's going to take me a while to get used to saying "AT&T Mobility") are noticing a distinct dip in smartphone sales. What's the explanation? Apparently, customers who would normally be investing in the high-end, email and multimedia-capable phones are holding off in anticipation of some new gadget that's coming in June. Nyuk nyuk nyuk.Munster's perennial Apple optimism notwithstanding, his suggestion that AAPL is heading into "the three strongest quarters" in corporate history may not be too far off target. His forecast for the company's stock, after the stellar 2nd quarter results? A cool $140.

To a lesser extent, the sale of smartphones are slowing among the carriers, too. I'm certainly waiting for the iPhone before getting back in bed with Cingular.

"Is iPhone anticipation slowing Cingular smartphone sales?"
Umm no? Cingular just plain suck. Fact of life.
As for iPhone anticipation? People will goto the Apple Store to play and drool on it, not buy.

I can see people waiting 3 months before buying a new one to see what the launch will be like. It is the most hyped device know to man....

I like my Samsung u740 (black) thank you very much. I can wait till the iPhone is available on all carriers (2+ years from now). And maybe by then they'll improve a lot of lacking features on the unreleased phone.

Count me as one of the holdouts. My RAZR went through the washer and instead of replacing it with a Blackberry Pearl, I'm waiting for the Jesus phone.

@ Billy,
The Cingular/Apple iPhone contract is more likely for 5 years, based on Sprint remarks about the proposed contract offered by Apple.

My Treo 650 is going to have to limp along for a couple of months until I get to read the reviews and play with an iPhone. No way am I going to spend money on a phone until then!

The contract on my old phone ran out in January, and instead of renewing it, I got myself one of those pay as you go TracPhones. Although it lacks on all fronts, there is one nice feature - these things can open beer bottles! So I will slum along with the phone of irresponsible teenagers until the iPhone is out. If the past is any indicator, my early adoption of it will influence at least 3-5 people that I associate with regularly, to also get an iPhone within the first 12 months. All these same people that we fascinated by my 3g iPod in 2003 (that is still used regularly) all have iPods of their own now (that are much nicer than my 3g!) I think the iPhone is going to be huge & more popular than most are anticipating. If only I had money to invest!

Yep... my Motorola that I've had for three years is failing, and I'm making do while I wait for the iPhone, and I KNOW I'm not alone.
Of course, I may need to sell a kidney to get one, but hey, who needs two, right?

actually wWw you are incorrect. Reports from the big 3, all clearly showed that smartphones sales were down across the board, but only in the last two months. It also showed that cingular (beating out verizon for the first time ever) had the most switches, with Cingular saying that up to 40% of the people with a (2-year, get a new phone deal) were holding off for the iPhone.
That's a HUGE figure even if it were only 10%. That's huge, not only are people switching to Cingular up 30% (That alone is crazy), but now people are stopping purchases of smartphones in anticipate of the iPhone
