My Dream App, the wildly successful American Idol of the Mac software world, is coming back for a Season 2 - and they need a few good developers. But this time around, they're adding a new layer to the competition by allowing users to vote on the actual developers who will get the chance to code the winning apps. A press release and announcement on
the My Dream App site states that the crew will be at the upcoming WWDC 07 in June doing video interviews with interested developers, but an email address is also provided if devs want to get a jump on things.
Whether you are eagerly watching development of the apps from Season 1 (and yes, they're still making progress; this stuff doesn't happen overnight), this new season should be pretty fun. I'm definitely interested to see which developers are interested in hopping on board, and which ones the public chooses to build the app winners.

Hopefully they change the voting to achieve better results. Maybe give the project leaders and developers more weight in the voting.
Two of the three apps from the first were among the most common, already available, apps possible.. a cookbook and a weather app?!? You gotta be kidding. An app to show me the weather, rather than looking out the window. Yeah, that's my dream app.. I might be exposed to sunlight if I get too close to a window.
They need to weight the entries based on other aspects like: uniqueness, usefulness, sellability, and existing competition.

Yeah, I have to admit, I thought the last round was pretty disappointing (disclosure: I did enter, so consider this sour grapes if you want).
But really. What'll win this time, a screensaver?

I was also disappointed in the results of Season 1. The only app that might come in handy - if I have have multiple Macs - is Portal. Cookbook and Atmosphere are just garbage, in my opinion.
My friend who was a contestant on My Dream App still hasn't received his prize. My friend contacted Phil Ryu several times (still is) and is not receiving any replies.

After the first rounds all of the surviving apps were crap or already available. For me it's the same as American Idol.
Portal is great without the cheesy WormHole graphics. I took this idea and made it possible with Hazel and a few applescripts.
Desktop Wars sounds cool and a similar Flash game is around and popular.
SweepIt sounds like Hazel

What would be really nice, is to get us the apps from the first time around before working on a new one...

If you like the idea of Portal, you should try DropCopy. It is free, and it is awesome.

#5 Exactly. What's the point of doing this again when we still don't know what the final product of the first "season" is going to be? Sure we know who the winner was last time, but no one knows yet whether the actual app that they develop will suck or not.
To me all this is right now is vaporware and a lot of hype.

I agree with #5. How long has it been since the end of the last competition?
