Seattle Times interviews AT&T point man for iPhone
Tech blogger and writer for the Seattle Times Brier Dudley did an interesting interview with Glenn Lurie, AT&T Mobility's president of national distribution. Lurie, it turns out, is the lead operations guy for AT&T's development and rollout of some wacky new cellphone that folks are all hot and bothered about.Lurie's experience with the iPhone engineering process (he's packing one, just so you know, but no pictures please or he'll need to have you killed) and Apple's laserlike focus on the customer experience has made him, shall we say, mildly optimistic about the prospects for the device: "The anticipation that we're seeing, the buzz we're seeing, at least for me, has far exceeded our expectations of how important this would be to the business and us." He also addresses the pricing conundrum of the iPhone by pointing out that when you add the $200 cost of an iPod Nano (the most popular model) to a standard $200 smartphone and a free-to-$50 regular phone, you're approaching the 4GB iPhone price.
Dudley posted some outtakes from the interview on his blog; most interesting question concerned streaming music. From a network perspective, Lurie says that AT&T can support it; however, the iPhone "being launched is not that, that's not where we're going." Local sync only for music, as expected.

You people are clueless. EDGE is fine for multimedia on a phone. Actually more than fine. I am in a area where AT@T have implemented "operation fine edge" and on my 3125 I am seeing speeds on average or over 200kps. I have tested all the way up to 279kps. I have not gone below 200kps yet with the upgrade to the EDGE upgrade. You people are clueless.
A class 12 device can get up to 300kps. I believe the iphone is a class 12 EDGE device or 5ts device. EVDO has realworld speeds or about 500 to 800kps HSDPA about 800 to 1200 and EVDO REV A about 700 to 1000kps. EDGE averaging between 200 and 300kps is considered "3G" and EDGE in configuration is fast indeed. And it will get faster. EDGE Evolution has speeds of 1000kps comparable to EVDO and HSDPA. Real world speeds of 500kps which is comparable to EVDO REV O. Get a clue.
Here is a website on the people who invented EDGE. EDGE implimented on a class 12 device and with a smartphone(or whatever the iphone is considered) to process the information at higher rates due to it's faster processor. All smartphones process data at higher rates than non-smartphones, and EDGE is no exception.
Get a clue. Most of the people on here who are complained about EDGE have not used the upgraded towers and higher speeds and not used a smartphone if they did. Or more likely have never actually used EDGE. 40Kps. LOL please.

The Evolution of EDGE is at the top to the right, very first one under the "white papers".
Don't hate, educate.
Ugh, every time I hear about the iPhone I change my mind about it. I want one, and I don't want one. Well, I do want one, but not yet. I wish Verizon would update their top Treo to the 755p like Sprint, I could get one and be satisfied at least until the second iPhone comes out. The Treo 650 I have now could die at any minute, and if Verizon doesn't have the 755p or any imminent plans to release it, I might do something really stupid when the iPhone comes out.

I remember when the first iPod came out, I had talked myself out of it during the time it was announced and the time I saw one in person. As soon as I got one in my hands I couldn't buy one fast enough, and I think that's how the iPhone will be. As long as it does the little things like sound clear, hold a call and not crash I think anyone who gets their hands on it will fall in love. That being said, I will be waiting for the rev. b. I figure, since I'm in canada and have to wait till it is released internationally, I might as well wait for them to get the kinks out.

The UK is renowned for expensive electronic prices, however it has ridiculously low phone prices as they are all subsidised by the carrier. I have an MDA Vario II which set me back $160 on a $40 a month contract (Including unlimited use of the HSDPA network).
I really like the iPhone, but you can't call it a smartphone when you compare it to my current device. I can freely install software, create and edit Microsoft Office documents, stream media. Apple need to stop using the word smartphone, becuse it really isn't. I hate to say it, but at present I won't be getting an iPhone :-(
These "ThunkDifferent.com" comments are getting obnoxious.

Hey Kevs,
It wasn't Marketing, it was beating the FCC. I'm sure if they had their druthers Apple wouldn't have said a word, but since the FCC holds info like a sieve holds water they wanted to be the ones who talked about it first.
You know, I wanted an iphone at the beginning. Then again with all the hype over the bloody thing, like when its going to be available, how much it will cost, which cellphone company is going to carry it, will it have 3G, etc, etc, blah, blah, blah.......
(Yawn)
Well, it leads me to say; I dont want one now! In fact, I'm sick of hearing about the thing.
For me the iphone has killed itself cos it just aint around for me to have seen one to re-kindle me yearning!
The iphone cant be that cool anymore to live up to its 'over hyped expectations'. Big marketing mistake!
'Here Kids, check out these great delicious Bonbons! No sorry you can't try one just yet, we are still working on the taste and fine tuning the colour"!

I will agree that the lock-in to EDGE speeds is a drawback for iPhone; but I do not see the price issue that others do. For the capabilities and Apple cachet of iPhone, the price is comparable to a Blackberry.
In fact, the EDGE issue points out the problems with Cingular/AT&T pricing, not Apple pricing. I'd gladly pay $500 for the iPhone, but if AT&T is planning on forcing a high-priced unlimited data plan at, say, $70/month for a low-speed EDGE connection, well... that is a different story. If AT&T allows the lower priced PDA plan for occasional data access, that would be acceptable since one would expect to use WiFi for the majority of the time, with only rare EDGE usage in the car or on the street. The Apple pricing seems right on target despite the complaints from some; the AT&T pricing is what should be more closely examined.
Nothing about third-party applications though... :-/
