WiFind replacement Airport menubar item
WiFind from Tasty Apps is a neat little replacement for Airport menubar item that adds some cool features. Specifically it shows right in the drop-down menu both whether or not networks are locked and also each WAP's signal strength. This is surely a much handier way to check all those networks at your local coffee shop, rather than just trying to connect to each one. It is worth pointing out, however, that WiFind does its magic via a SIMBL plugin.WiFind is $8 and a demo is available.

There's something similar (and free) that I've been using for awhile:

AFAIK, Coconut Wifi does not show signal strength, only encryption/non-encryption status. The signal strength indicator is particularly helpful... it's really frustrating to click on an AP name only to find that the signal is so weak that it's next to useless.

How do you uninstall this thing?

After I installed this plugin the Wifi-Menu behaved really slow and I couldn't deactivate wireless. So I removed it.
@paul: go to /Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins and delete the WiFind file.

number 5 - http://www.tastyapps.com/wifind_faq.html - the last one.
I was actually in need of something of this ilk in exactly the described coffee shop scenario. I thought one must exist.....

The regular AirPort menu allows you to sort in order of decreasing signal strength if you option-click it.

You know, I think (especially after all of this "Mac 101" stuff) it's a good idea to try option-clicking everything. There's a lot of fantastic stuff hidden ;-)

That's a great utility. Something so simple yet so useful. Apple should buy this and implement it into 10.5.

Coconut wifi, well I used it for awhile then my signal strength on my MBP kept dipping in and out on my home network. A little digging around on the internet (when signal strength allowed) showed that coconut wifi was the culprit. I don't know if they've changed the code or not but I'm staying away from that app, even though it did what it was suppose to do very well.
