iTunes 7.2 lays groundwork for iTunes Plus
Late last night/early this morning Apple pushed out an update to iTunes via Software Update, bringing it to version 7.2. The only obvious change is support for "iTunes Plus," which is apparently what Apple is calling the new DRM free $1.29 tracks announced back in April with EMI. The "What's New" section of the iTunes 7.2 Help includes this line: "With iTunes 7.2, preview and purchase iTunes Plus music-new higher-quality, DRM-free music downloads from participating music labels." As of this writing, however, the iTunes Store does not appear to have been updated with the DRM free tracks; presumably this will be forthcoming shortly. Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

They must still be working on putting up the DRM free music, as the New Zealand iTunes Store Single of the Week has not yet been updated (now at least 24 hours overdue)

Besides DRM free music I really hope they do something also for the AppleTV owners outside the US. But would be in the realm of miracles. I still hope something is going to happen at WWDC in a couple of weeks time.

iTunes now correctly lists podcasts in alphabetical order, so now "The Daily Mayo" is ordered as a D opposed to the previous listing under T. I'm all for this sort of thing.

Is anybody else experiencing improved scrolling in "artwork-mode".
I have about 250 different albums (3500 songs) all with artwork and in the previous iTunes it took my PowerBook G4 some time to get all the artwork in place when I scrolled threw them. But now it's all there in a blink. Don't know how but I like it :-)

I thought this would be out last week, in fact i think it was delayed. There was no single of the week last week, 'til very late on. This ONLY ever happens when there is an iTunes update.

Warning to fans of the old iTunes aqua look, Paul Barlow's Aqua4iTunes no longer works with 7.2, I had to reinstall iTunes after running Aqua4iTunes.

It's live now - you need to enable iTunes Plus in your account profile. I posted a little article on it here:

I really hope we are one step closer to being able to buy internationally from any store, any content. THe current system is just not consumer friendly (for those of us who want to buy foreign content)

Exactly. It all depends on label's choice. A good example would be Metallica - Their US label Elektra agreed to selling Metallica's music on iTunes USA. But the European label Vertigo wasn't hot on the idea. So you can't buy Metallica's song on iTunes UK or France, Germany...etc as of yet.

Admiral, just remember that's the labels choice, not Apple's. Apple would love to do that if the labels would let them. I also hope that the other labels will follow EMI's lead and relinquish control.

hi,
@svds: coverflow is also significantly faster than in the previous version on my 1 year old ibook :)
however, it seems to be impossible to turn the new itunes version into graphite appearance mode which makes it a little bit confusing and candy among the other applications :(
anybody else experiencing this? any hints how to solve it?
thanks

Matt: WTF? Now they are starting to offer DRM-free tunes from any label that allows them to. If you aren't going to grant them that, then I'd say that you are being unreasonable.

I looks like the new iTunes update also brings you lyrics with the songs you purchase from the iTunes Store!

DRM is bad, terrible, and evil! Thus making the new iTunes update bad, terrible, and evil. http://www.eff.org/IP/DRM/guide/
